I have Blender 2.49b installed, I'd say I have it since that version was released but I have used it just a couple of times to make a couple of tutorials, but then I never found time to continue.
Michalis gave me a useful link to texture models in Blender to import them to SU, but I'm a mess with the mapping and retopoing and all that...
http://www.sketchupartists.org/tutorials/sketchup-and-blender/blender-to-sketchup-a-workaround-for-texturing-organic-shapes/Each time I see something done in blender or some one saying he uses it, I promise myself I'll try again. So, this time I'm making a promise again (why would be different this time????)
I used sculptris and made some doodles, but I can't use it here at work (something to do with my graphic card and shaders... I can open the old version and can't use the decimator) and never find time when I'm home LOL
Ahhhh now I come to think it. My avatar was made in sculptris

I have opened Blender yesterday.
I have tried to do something with this box we open on.
for me, impossible to do nothing. I have to read the guide. I shall report...Dear Karina,
I must say that I always appreciate a lot your talent and imagination of your posts on Speed Modelling Challenges

Hey Simon!
Thanks and Thanks
You've just made my day happierMy relation with Blender is similar to yours, don't worry. It took me a day to subdivide the default square.
OK, maybe less, but I it is not an intuitive software to learn (like SU) LOL -
Simon
Blender has always been a temptation, but if anyone can conquer it, it's you. If you decide to forge ahead with it, please give us a play by play on your progress. I will watch with anticipation.
Cheers -
Use Blender after Su is a very painful thing!
It's not an intuitive prog!Bon courage!
-
I agree with you, Blender after SU is like rocket science after sex.

thank you Pete, you don't know how much you saved my mood this evening

I always fell asleep during science!

@Simon: I started with Blender2.45 at the same time I started with Sketchup6.0. I used the Blender Wiki User Manual. It introduced step by step modeling. I guess it is still available I found it necessary to download and print it because flipping between windows was so tedious. Some of the key strokes have faded from my memory in the last four years.
Most of the fine plugins available for Sketchup are already native to Blender. I had to put Blender on the shelf in order to concentrate on development of my Sketchup skills. Every thing in Sketchup is more accessible. There are quite a few capabilities in Sketchup I have not explored, so Blender may have to wait a little longer. -
Sorry, still roflmao...
Simon, just wanted to say thank you for starting this thread. Really encouraged me to play with Sculptris once again (hope I find some time soon).
Will be following this with interest, keep it going!

Another observation:
Many of you have skills, knowledge and experience beyond merely modeling. Most of those skills require methods just as Byzantine as the techniques available in Blender, so it must be that learning yet another complicated toolset is what hinders you. It certainly is what hinders me. -
"nothing in life is free" - my dad.
Even though Blender costs nothing, the time needed to learn it fluently is very expensive.

Hi to all,
I'm very pleased to see this thread so active!
Blender seems to need a specific thread because it represents a hot point for many of us..
and Thanks for the nice feedbackssixth Day: 2011-01-19
This is the first "black day" for me, nothing comes easily. What I have already learned eat my first spontaneity.I follow the first tip of the included DrPetter's documentation:

Tips
Feel free to play around and see what the tools can do. I highly recommend creating improvised chaotic shapes without any careful design - it's a great way to become familiar with the tools, and also a lot of fun.

Conseils
N'hésitez pas à jouer et voir ce que les outils réalisent. Je recommande fortement la création improvisée formes chaotiques sans aucune conception soignée - c'est un excellent moyen de se familiariser avec les outils, et aussi beaucoup de plaisir.

Cool work here Simon. What is the third image from the top supposed to be though?
I found this tutorial for those interested in blender. I don't use blender and haven't started the tutorial yet so I don't know if it's any good. I just came across it and thought I'd try it if I ever decided to take up blender.

I think a lot of people give up on blender too quickly. You'd be surprised at how quickly you get to grips with it. Take the right button rather than left button approach they took. They reason that most modellers use the left button so often during the day that this prevented repetive strain.
Blender is really a testament to open source/community led developement. I've barely scratched the surface but it is an app that all SU users should learn the basics to. It gives you a better understanding of how to approach the native SU tools when modelling.
Back on topic to Simon's work so far....
As always a pleasure to follow and nice execution. I had sculptris awhile ago but this has poked my interest once more. Thank you for sharing your creatures

Nice sculpting tries here
About blender, Pete was so precise... I mean it, I wrote something similar in blenderartists forum. When complaining and the answer was "OK, it didn't cost you much"@unknownuser said:

The good news are that you can start from here.

Hi all!I have an exiting announcement to make: I’m joining Pilgway/3DCoat team!!!!! my Unlimited Clay efforts are higy appreciated by them and I will be collaborating to integrate dynamic subdivision sculpting in 3DCoat.
3DCoat (http://www.3d-coat.com/) is a leading sculpting application in the bleeding edge of volumetric sculpting and retopology and I’m becoming part of the core team!!!!!!!!
I thanks everyone at the Blender community because one way or another you have taken myself to this point and who knows what could bring the future?
For my loyal Blender followers that can be fear of myself leaving Blender developemnt I must say: Don’t be afraid! At first I was a concerned by the possibility of a restrictive NDA, but nothing more far from reality! Pilgway/3DC team is like the Blender team very cool, open and collaborative guys ! ofcourse I can continue blender development and your beloved Unlimited Clay now and in the future
I’m pretty exited because many new things will await us all in the future and also with everyone and God’s help I will carry you all in my heart to my new 3D family, the 3DC team respects a lot the Blender community and with blender becoming mainstream there’s no better time to meet the marriage: I will be a Blender embassador in 3DCoat and a 3DCoat embassador in Blender so this blog wellcomes 3DCoat users as well as Blender ones!
Exiting times await! And as I always said: I have the will and the interest and I will do my best to fullfill the responsability and expectations everyone are investing in me
All the best
FarstharyTom
