OSX users: - a quick survey - one question
-
I have always had the plugins folder, no matter what system I had installed. it may be an installer quirk.
-
And the Google folder?
/Library/Application Support/Google/Google SketchUp [n]/
or
library/application support/Google Sketchup 8/Sketchup/
?
-
On mine the path is Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp n/SketchUp/Plugins where n is the version number.
-
library/application support/Google Sketchup 8/Sketchup/Plugins
the number 8 may have appeared because I had sketchup 7 installed.

On Googles pages they describe where to place plugins: http://code.google.com/apis/sketchup/docs/loading.html
/Library/Application Support/Google/Google SketchUp [n/SketchUp/plugins]they messed up on that page.. the part where it says -"on OS X, the plugins are installed..." shows the correct path but just under it in the box, it gives the wrong path

But, today I was contacted by a plugin user today that reported that they did not have a Google folder under application support, but instead just Google Sketchup 8. (And no plugins folder.)
library/application support/Google Sketchup 8/Sketchup/This user was using OSX 10.5.8.
this user was probably in their user directory instead of the system files..
advise them to go Macintosh HD (or whatever their root drive is named)/Library/ Application Support/ Google SketchUp n/ SketchUp/pluginson mac, there is also this path:
user/ library/ Application Support/ Google SketchUp/ SketchUp/ (no plugins folder)
this is where the autosave folder is, the custom materials, and the keyboard shortcut plist is stored per user.. -
as above- Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp/SketchUp/plugins

Wouldn't that slash at the end imply there was more beyond?
mine
/Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp 8/SketchUp/plugins/

Does it? I usually append / on folder paths just to indicate the last item in the path is a folder and not a file.
Is a / at the beginning of an OSX path as an indicator of the root a known thing amongst most OSX users? Or is there another convention?
-
I would read the slash at the end as you do Thomas. It would indicate to me that the last word is actually a folder/directory. As to a slash at the beginning, I would read that as indicating there's more to the path but that part is understood and just omitted.
-
If I prefixed the path with Macintosh HD - would that be better?
Maybe accompanied with two screenshot - one of the correct path and other of the incorrect user path with a big fat X on it?
...need to get that installer script sorted...

i'm not sure how well known it is but yes, a / at the beginning of the path indicates the root volume.. a ~ at the beginning ( ~/library/etc ) indicates the user directory..

-
/Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp 8/SketchUp/plugins
/Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp 8/SketchUp/plugins/bezierspline.rb
/Users/johns_iMac/Library/Application Support/Google/Google Talk Plugin
/Library/Application Support/Google/GoogleTalkPlugin.appthere are a couple of Google folders on mine, but not for SU, just other bits and bobs
