V-ray questions

Damien, thank you for taking the time out to explain some of the technicalities of Vray and welcome to SCF.
It's always a good thing when developers are able to consult and advise on open forum, I know you are very active at ASGvis and glad you have also 'broken the seal' here too.My next question is regarding displacement (I'm sure that this is a well covered subject on the vray site, but for those who are new or in a deciding capacity as far as render engines goes I will ask my questions here)
I have been trying to master displacement on simple objects before using it on any real projects, I have noticed that it totally kills render times which is expected and in line with most other render apps. I have found a few strange behaviors however, below is a simple SU model with a grass displacement on it, it rendered perfectly the first time but when iI decided to add the white band the render was flat without any displacement, I then made the band a group and rendered and it worked again giving me the result below. My question is... does the grouping of two material adjacent to another where one is displaced and the other not have any significance?

Hi,
There is anyway that you put for all the settings for this excellent way to make grass in your worm. Kind to step by step to make displacement. I look in the web and asgvis and is not very clear how I can get this awesome results, Please need help ASAP with this I have a presentation in my college.
thanks.

Kalu
I'd love to but I unfortunately was using a trial version which has expired a long time ago, I'm sure that one of the many Vray guys here will be able to help.

Hi SOLO,
Thank you for your quick response, I've try and try for 6 hours with many options and I not close to this results. I post the help in ASGVIS forum and I hope someone come out with the exact help.
Also are you the same guy in the PODIUM forum? I am there since they started the soft.Kalu.
PS. PLEASE any help ASAP I appreciate!!!!!!!

Kalu, I'm sure someone there will be around soon enough to give more help.
Yes, that's me.

just got a chance to read through this thread...Solo, have you solved your recent problem? I am not sure if i am understanding this completely but it sounds like you took a model to a new computer correct? Vray is very similar to the way autocad handles xreferences (if that sounds familiar?) and you need to have the root files in the original location that they were when you first applied them. I hope that helps?
-
Steelers, I did actually solve it, but that's in the past as I was running the trial version, maybe when the economy picks up or I will look into spending the money to buy Vray 2.

Last one for the displacement tests, using a single face (no thickness) with a texture and displacement.
I believe displacement is under the belt, now the next thing I need to get a grip of is D.O.F, anyone got any good tips that can help?
Hi there SOLO, first off, really great results there,
second would you mind sharing the SKP of the rug also so i can dissect the vray settings and the disp image?? -
Rachid, I will take a look for it tommorrow (it's on an old machine)

hey thnx mate, don't worry i don't mind the wait,
they say "great things come to those who wait" so i do qualify for that hahaha
thnx again mate -
how can i get rid of that white spots? im using irradiance as primary and light cache as secondary engine everything else as default settings.
-
A quick-fix is to Clamp Colors under Color Mapping.
-
Rachid, I cannot seem to find that carpet scene any more, I can give you the maps however, in the zip file is a normal, diffuse, specular and displacement map.

Just now noticed that you posted Pete,
thnx for the help,
having the maps i can play around with them to find as close as result as you mate, so don't worry about the scene
thank you again for the help mate -

I downloaded the carpet too thks Solo, but what is the carpet773_NORMAL image for? and also were do u put the specular image? In the fresnel color or in the highlight and reflection glossiness there is kind of a debate in that.

I'm using the same primary and secondary engines and I seem to get these white spots whenever I have the reflection glossiness set to anything less than 1 (lower gets worse I think). What is the cause/solution to this?? I basically just want a material that that is reflective but not like a mirror, is that so hard?
-
I've been using vray for 3DS max for about 4 years now, I've been using VfSU for about 2 months and I'm having some issues with graininess. I haven't had this issue with max, so I'm wondering if you guys can help me.
I'm looking to get a metal material like a aluminum or steel with a powder coat finish. So something that is reflective, but not like a mirror. I'm modeling mullions and garage doors using this material. Here are some pics of the material in context:
I know there are a lot of settings that effect the materials and how they render out. I've done a bunch of tests using different environment settings and I've tried several material adjustments. But if any body out there would so kind or interested in helping me out, I set up a test file using the same materials I'm using in my scene.
I want to say it's either a shadow related setting in the environment rollouts, or I'm just plain screwing up the material for some reason, either way I could use some help. Thanks!
-
perhaps something like this (using vray 1.5)
It's a bit strange coz, SU can't update the material as seen on my render image, anyway here's the file.
-
Hey thanks for the test. Did you adjust the lighting/shadow settings?
The client was happy with the images that I got out. It was not the most design rich project I've worked on, but a great exercise to try out the new vray. There were definitely ALOT of growing pains with the new release, but I have to admit, I'm addicted to the ease of alpha transparency support.
Take a look, feedback is more than welcome. I could not have done it without the help of you guys in the forum.
-
you're welcome wahoo, yes i thought i was change a bit about physical camera option, hopefully it recorded on my file, coz sometimes vray for su forgot about the setting when we move the file to other computer
bytw, is the image you posted originally from the vray su render? well, i think, it will be better if you play a bit on PS (or image editing software) to tweak for brightness and contrast of the image.
nice project bro..
regards,
