De-Tripling (De-Triangularization)
-
Sometimes one winds up with a model (frequently imported)which contains a large number of unnecessary triangular polys (for example a flat plane which needs be defined only by its edges but nonetheless is subdivided into many polygons across its face).
Does anyone know of an automated tool that can analyze a model, and "de-triple" (combine together into one flat poly) polygons that are unnecessarily subdivided?
thanks,
karl

ThomThom's CleanUp would be one option.

If erasing the triangulation lines also results in erasing geometry (which will mean that cleanup won't get rid of those lines) then do this:
1- Use the Axes tool and set it to the plane's surface.
2- Select the entire planar surface along with all triangulation lines.
3- Use thomthom's Vertex Tools ($20) gizmo to scale the surface on the "z" plane to zero. (The "z" plane is the perpendicular plane to the surface).
4- Erase lines with eraser. -
I should also mention that you can use the above directions to flatten any uneven surface or make any selected geometry flatten to a single perfectly flat plane.

Artisan has an option to decrease the the amount of triangles.

Tried installing Cleanup but weirdly enough while it shows up in the Plugins Manager, it's nowhere to be found on any menu.
Xiombarg - thanks for the tip. Also, great choice of screen name.
Bob James - I use Artisan but unfortunately its polygon reduction facility leaves lots of triples and distorts geometry too much, at the level of cleanup I need to perform.

Have you Activate the CleanUp Extension ?
Did you also install TT_Lib it needs ?? -
...and there it is. Always nice when someone points you in the right direction. Thanks!
