Is this possible to do? If not, dang I have wasted a bunch of time trying to make it work.

Do you mean by using an opening-cutting component?

          Dave,

Yes I do. Creating a component that uses the Cut-Opening feature and having it work on both sides of the roof pitch.

No chance spence... Tried it and failed!

There is only one plane for hole cutting components. You have a simmetric geometry there so you could create only half component and mirror it if you'd like.

You had to then hide some edges on the cutting plane, so they wouldn't show on the openning, and also the edges on the sides, so the walls would look continuous.

Almost no work would be lost...

            Best regards,

              Hi

one method is build various cutting planes within a wrapper component, thus activating them and leaving other embedded objects after exploding

note that the wrapper has its own cutting plane, the axis is also placed for ease of use

However the outline of the existing edge is left behind (the ridge in this case)

              Philip

insert @ ridge line then explode

                pcmoor,

Yes you could do that and I've considered it once or twice, for standard doors and windows.

I didn't find it practical though... Why create a more complex component that you have to explode, if it is easier to just have 1 simple component mirrored?

Have you found other practical uses for that method? I definetly think Sketchup should have multiple hole cutting components. Those, combined with dynamic components, could become interesting...

                Best regards,

I think in this case you'd be better off making the hole[s] in the two roof planes manually, then if you want to relocate a rooflight just select the instance and the geometry of the roof planes forming the hole.

You can copy/paste geometry that forms the edges of the 'holes', so you need not necessarily have to manually form each hole, once one is hole-set done to your liking...

Good suggestions. I tried the mirror one half of the component and that seems to work fine. What I was hoping for is to be able to turn one skylight option off and another on all while both could "Cut-Openings" but this does not seem to work. When I hide the component layer the "Cut-Opening" appears on the roof.

I'm not sure I understand your problem, but I think what you need is this:

![Scene 1 - No layers but "Layer 0" are visible](/uploads/imported_attachments/DDqW_Holecutlayers-Scene1.jpg "Scene 1 - No layers but "Layer 0" are visible")
                      Scene 2 - Layer 1 visible
                      Scene 3 - Layer 2 visible
Scene 4 - All layers visible

So take a look at the model attached.

                        JQL,

That's it! So I have exactly that going on and when I hide one skylight option the cut-opening stay on the roof, but I have since found out that they go away after clicking in and out of the group. Thanks for all you help I think I have "Cut-Openings" completely covered.
