you want your textures to tile, you just want the tiles to be seam-less and non-repeating (no obvious elements that make a distinct pattern), tileable textures are your friend, especially with stone, block, and wood textures.

How'd you do that? How did you stop it from going crazy? Did you see what I was doing wrong in my model?

you could make them they are just photoreal images trimmed and placed at 90 degrees to each other with the trunk being the ceter of the two images.
