You should calculate the location of the CG of the trailer and position the wheels so that 10-15% of the trailer's weight is on the tongue. As to where the wheels end up, it'll depend upon the trailer.

What you say makes perfect sense however not being an engineer myself I have no idea how to :-
(1)Calculate the CG (assume that's Center of Gravity) and
(2)Calculate if 10-15% of the trailer's weight is on the tongue.

      Good answer tho

    • Where to put wheels?

This is not a SU specific topic, but I'm hoping someone with an engineering background might also be a SU user.

I'm trying to design a camper/trailer and have no idea how to determine the correct placement for the wheels/axle. Is it at the point of balance (is this the fulcrum point?) or somewhere else? Is there an easy way to geometrically find the correct position or is the whole thing far more complex than some basic geometry? I'm hoping not.

My apologies if this question if too far off topic to warrant discussion, but if it helps, I am using SU to design the thing.

If all else fails, I can always go off some design plans (if i can find any) and design the camper to match a known chassis design, but it would be nice to know how to do it.

    • RE: Golden Ratio plugin?

Great! - Thanks for that. I knew there'd be one out there. I'll check it out.

    • Golden Ratio plugin?

I was wondering if there's a simple plugin out there that will divide a line into the Golden Ratio (phi)?

If anyone cares to create one, it would be nice to have the option to swap the major/minor lengths ie: the placement of the dividing point.

I know how to do it manually - geometrically, but my method is messy and tedious and involves using the circle tool to create construction arcs to find intersections followed by deleting surplus geometry.

      (omg - there's an idea ... a tool that creates circular/arc construction lines ?!)

I've also never seen this mentioned by anyone else, either.

This is where I saw someone else report the same issue ...

      Is that drive always available?

Yes, it is - it's an internal 2nd drive. It's odd that it's not happening to others. I can't think what setting I might have that's different - it's a standard install.

Just a stab in the dark: Are some of your default file paths pointing to somewhere inside the Program Files folder?

      Anssi

No, they stored on a completely separate drive in their own folder structure specific to SU. ie D:\SketchUp...

    • RE: Garbage backup files on desktop?

All the SKP files I work on are in various folders - I try to group similar models in separate folders. Sometimes (ie usually) I will open one file from some place but only use it as a starter and save it to another folder as I make changes so as to keep the original unchanged. I never have any SU files (or any other type of file except shortcuts) on my desktop.

As for SU's folder setup - I have ALL of the options set to point to *D:\SKETCHUP* from the Preferences > Files dialog.

The fact that this is a seemingly random occurrence makes it a bit more mysterious and odd.

I might have to resort to turning off the auto-save option for 2 reasons - (1) The issue I am currently having and (2) All those SKB files being scattered all over my system and not being removed can amount to a lot of lost space if I forget to chase them down. I like the idea of auto-save, but dislike the waste they generate especially on my desktop.

Does anyone know (given my workflow) what else might be causing this?

    • Garbage backup files on desktop?

      Hi,

I cannot understand why SU (currently v8 but it did it in v7 as well) keeps creating a myriad of .skb files and dumping them on my desktop and leaving them there after closing down.

I've checked the preferences and anywhere else I can find where a folder is involved and made sure they point to where I want them to point and yet randomly I keep getting these spurious files created and scattered over my desktop.

Does anyone know why this is happening and more importantly how to stop it?

(I did see one mention of this feature that implied that it might happen if the project files are being accessed via a network or the target drive is not available - In my case, everything is local so it's not a drive access issue or a network one. Must be something else.)

      Any ideas?

    • RE: Lock toolbars

This is incredible ... this thread alone has been going since Apr 2008 ... more than 30 months and STILL no resolution to the extremely annoying issue. Version 8 has now come out and guess what - I STILL DOES IT!!.

OMFG - What does it take for goooooooogle to pull their finger out and address this problem?

Someone else said that it's been around since at least v4 ... how long ago was that?!

Given the enormous resource base of gooooooogle, rivaled probably only by microsoft and yahoo in scale - how bad must their developers be if they can't solve this problem in the years that they've had to mess with it.

      totally gob-smacked!
