Arcad, how do you make the drawings when you work with SU? Make the model no problem, make nice pictures in 3d no problem but exact drawings in 2d???? I think Layout is to instable and weak.

Bah! If that were the case I'd be out of business. Having used ACAD for over 20 years, I can tell you my drawings are far more accurate now using both SU and LO.

Yes, that is exactly what I do. Works really well.

And may I ask you what do you do when you need to put height dimensions of this sort (attached)?
So far I haven't found them in SketchUp nor in LayOut.

In layout, use the stock scrapbooks or create your own.

Maybe hidden geometry. Make sure it is unchecked in the saved view.

Easy solution. Import the dwg into SU. Then copy paste into layout. Vector render it.....and your done.

Those little speakers sound amazing. The are Klipsch THX with a powered sub! They also look tiny against the three 47" screens.

As for the whiplash. It's really not bad. What I love is the peripheral affect when you are modeling. Definitely immerses you into the model.

It will run 4. It has an HDMI, Display port, DVI-I and DVI-D, You can run one continuous screen across all 4, Run 4 independent, or mix and match as you like. It is also very large, so I would personally be cautious with a mid tower.

Go for the 680 4gb. It is incredible, even running (3) 47" LED's at 1080P. It is well worth the money.

I'm late. I just purchased one from "Origin" computers. Best machine I've ever had. I have similar specs:

Full tower case with 5 120mm fans Bitfenix shinobi XL
      Asus P9X79 WS MB
Origin Frostbyte 360 sealed liquid cooling
      64 gb ram
      Intel i7 3930 clocked 4.2-4.4
      EVGA GTX 680 4 gb
      180 gb SSD
      1 TB 7200 rpm drive
      850 W Corsair Power supply
      Bluray
      multi card reader
The best customer service I've ever experienced - Lifetime 24/7 US based
Windows 7 64 bit pro ultimate

So fairly close specs - I paid $3,600.

    • RE: A tip on copy/paste from Sketchup to Layout

Porch got it. I don't typically "send to layout" though. I usually insert the model in Layout, then make a copy of the same viewport. In layout, I set the model in raster mode on a layer called "SU Model", and the line work in vector mode on a layer called "Line Work".

If you set your scenes correctly, this mode allows you to simply render each view to scale without any re-positioning of the viewport, since both scenes are identical with regards to position in SU. This process has really sped things up, especially for building sections where I typically have around 12-20 section on a typical home.

I'm going to really test the efficiency this spring as I just took on two projects that I am hoping to submit in mid-April.

I can tell your working with architectural drawings. I'm going to say what most will not, and that is that architects are some of the absolute worst when it comes to drawing things precisely in autocad drawings. 😆

I beg to differ - engineers are the absolute worst at snaps, trims, etc. Not to mention there redlines on drawings...

Agreed. Although many Architects are just as guilty.

    • RE: Why does LO always crashes on exit?

The only time this happens to me is when I try to close Layout with multiple files open - usually more than 4. If I close out files individually and then close Layout with no files open, it never crashes. Strange though.

Hi Edson, I stopped doing the copy paste and do everything by scenes in SU. Thankfully someone from Base Camp set me straight. So in SU you just need to isolate the line work in a view. In Layout you can simply copy your su view and paste (which will set it exactly on top of the other view). Then vector render the line work view. Very simple and easy. I've also been playing around with Tig's plugin for the section slice. So far so good!

33.2 mb is huge for a single room. I have an entire home that is 5300 sf on the 1.4 acre property that is the same size. As stated above, use groups and components for all entities. With that card, you shouldn't have to work in monochrome mode. I never do. Shadows of course off when working really does make the difference.

    • RE: Sketchup 64 bit?

Wow, this got pretty passionate. Jason, I thought you were in the architecture end of business, but I just noticed the illustration/cartoons aspect. What are you specifically looking for? For me, the BIM use is already there and just needs the ability to quantify graphically. Is it speed? We all want that as well.

I also think you are not giving enough credit for what John has done with SU to date. Not that I have any right to direct your opinion, but there are many aspects of where we are now that John has certainly had a major influence.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil, but being more constructive about it will go miles.

    • RE: Sketchup 64 bit?

Obvioulsy, I'm no programmer, but doesn't 64 bit open the door for new avenues. As John stated, other plug-in developers would benefit from a 64 bit format. Maybe SU in its current configuration doesn't benefit from 64 bit, but what about the future; not only within SU itself, but how it works with other 64 bit programs (all the rendering engines I use)?

Again, to me speed is not necessarily the main drive of performance. A lot of that can be accelerated with hardware as John mentioned. I'm amazed what my new EVGA GTX 680 with 4Gb can do on (3) 47" monitors. Heck when I am moving quickly in orbit, all the materials stay rendered.
