    • How much to model?

Using SU on MACS for a while (also formZ and Powercad on Macs and Revit on the PC); not an expert by any means but kinda know my way around.
I've used SU mainly for massing and quick studies of smaller projects (single family, small commercial buildings).
Started trying LO a few weeks ago and was frustrated by its "clunkiness" compared to…. say... PowerCad (awesome, extremely powerful 2D Cad for the mac; a true blend of ACAD or the old Microstation and Illustrator). So my work flow has been exporting from SU to Powercad and doing ALL the CD work in Powercad. As I try to start using LO, my questions are:
How much modeling are you doing in SU? how much detail is in the model vs LO?

In the past I've modeled just the "rough" walls/roofs mass (similar to BIM standard LOD 200) and added all the detail (textures, hatching, color, line weights, symbols, dims, text, titles, etc) in PowerCad; but as I try to do it in LO, there are just not enough tools to control how i want my CD's to look (I use a similar work flow in Revit). It seems that I would have to do A LOT more modeling in SU like modeling rafters, joists, slabs, accurate openings, gutters, thicknesses of materials, etc. That's A LOT of modeling …

      Interested in hearing your comments.

BTW if you are on a Mac and have not heard to PowerCad; check it out; it's been around since the 80's (by Engineered software). Check out also Wild Tools which is a plug-in for PowerCad; many other plugs-ins available)... I wish SU and PowerCad would merge….

I didn't bother with the "bottom only" option, but this should work….

      Hope this helps.

      Awesome!! Thanks!!!!!
DC's are little more involved than what I can handle at this time. I am trying to get my component collection so I can spend more time designing and less time in "busy stuff". Doors, and Millwork are my next try…

    • Dynamic component edit

Downloaded some good dynamic components for windows from Marvin windows for a residential project. The only problem I'm having is that now, I'd like to have grilles only on the top sash but the component options only allow to modify number of grilles for both, top AND bottom sash; So, is there way to edit the formula to only have grilles on the top sash?
So far I've been removing the bottom grilles in photoshop but it's a pain to do it every time I print…
      Thoughts?

    • Object info

Fairly new to sketchup and trying to see if there is a way to edit object via dialog box.... Say a rectangle, select the face and change parameters in the object info box. I can edit a line, but that is it
Also, is there a way to move objects with the arrow keys based on a set increment or snap value?

Mac OS 10.8 skp pro 2014
      Thanks

    • Updates

      Ok, a few questions…
if I have the Pro 2014 version (mac) at home and another one at office, how do i move my preferences, styles, plug-ins, settings, components etc from one computer to the other?
If I upgrade to version 2015, does it overwrite the 2014 version or does it create a separate app folder for 2015?; I'd like to keep 2014 also.
If I keep the 2014 version, how do i get my styles, etc into 2015? I'll probably wait a little to start using 2015 anyway
What about my plug-ins in 2014? do they work on 2015?
      Thanks!

    • RE: Sketchup Pro- not found in Application Support folder

They don't recommend adding to the folder, they want you to use the extensions menu for all plug ins...
