    • RE: Can't open Sketchup Files in SU8

      Hi Gaieus,

I Think I got it figured out. I did a system restore back to before I downloaded SU8, then redownloaded SU8, and kept SU7 (which I got back with the restore). Now if I open SU8 than close it, my old files that were drawn with SU7 now open in SU8.

Now my question is, do I have to keep SU7 in my computer? Thats were I went wrong the last time. When I removed SU7, I could no longer open any old files. SU8 worked fine and could start a new model, and then reopen it. just couldent open old models that were made with SU7. When 7 was removed, no files showed up in the menu of SU8. The only way I could try to open them was by clicking on them in there folders, and then I would get the "what program do you wish to open this file with" pop-up.

    • Can't open Sketchup Files in SU8

I recently down loaded sketchup 8, and after doing so I immediatly removed SU7, now I can't open any of my drawings that I made with SU7??? Is there something I need to change so I can open my drawings, surely I don't have to redraw all of them. I'm running Windows 7 home premium 32 bit edition. any help will be appreciated, Thanks

You can change the number of edges and arches before your extrude them by using the Entity Into window.

You can also set the number of sides when you draw circles and arches. Type "8s" in the VCB to make 8 sides, etc etc.

I did'nt realize that, thank you. I'll give it a whirl.

Thanks for all you guys' help

Yup. That mesh has 42K faces. Each circle of 1mm has 24 sides.
AT what scale are you working? Will you ever be close up to the mesh? Macro style views? If not, you can get away with 6-8 sides for the circles. Or even just a texture.

You will experience faster viewport if you turn of Profiles under the Edge section in the Styles window. Edge effects can slow down a model as much as shadows.

Scale is 1 to 1, won't really be close up, just want to be able to see through it.

Is there a way to change the circle tool to only draw at 6 ot 8 sides? or would I have to draw them by hand. changing the sides would definatly work if there is an option that I don't know about that changes the number of sides.

Now that works, I should have thought of this myself.

Do you know how to use FTP? I can PM you a password to a folder on my FTP if you want to put it there for a few days.

      Chris

Don't know what "FTP" is, let alone how to use it. Appreciate the offer though.

For some unknown reason I just cant upload this model, even if its not extruded, tried it on both machines. I did upload a Bulgin power switch that I drew up the other day & uploaded just fine took about 1 minute if that long, so that leads me to believe its the model itself!!

If I ever figure out how to get to upload I will let ya know.

Thanks for the help in trying to figure this out.

I just loaded SU7 onto my HP machine, & drew up another fan grill. The problems seem to be worse on that computer. As soon as I try to extrude to the proper thickness SU stops responding. its been a couple minutes now & its still not responding.

Would it help if i upload the grill with just the layout, not extruded, so you guys can try to extrude or figure out what is going on? Or should I just let it go and assume SU isnt powerful enough to do what I'm trying?

I have the latest Drivers from ATI for my video card (cat 9.3), not sure about mobo, will have to check asus site to make sure.

I have an older HP computer with XP and an Invidia 8600GT vid card installed, with an Athlon 4200+ dual core processor. I'm going to download SU 7 on it and draw up another grill & see how it acts on that machine, and go from there.

How big is the model? in megabytes i mean.

      12.3 MB (12,909,566 bytes)

I just canceled the upload, and when I did SU stopped responding!! I guess its just the file size and too much detail. Too many little circles

Yeah, i was asking you to upload it. We might be able to point out some stuff that would help speed up your model, if it is indeed the complexity of it which is slowing things down.

Well, I'm currently trying to upload this fan grill model. Its been uploading for almost an hour now!!! On the "export progress..." pop up window its still writing entities and the red bar is only about 1/4" long. This is going to take awhile if it works at all!!!

Wow, thanks for the quick responses.

      At Chris,
well, less detail kinda defeats the purpose! guess i could if i half to. I always use the default styles, & keep profile edges off, it seems to run better that way.

      At remus,
not sure what you mean? are you aksing if i tried to upload the grill model? or if you want me to upload the grill model? I never tried uploading the the model but i will if needed.

    • Sketchup Quits Responding?

Hey all, I'm new to your forum, & need some help/advice with a problem I'm having using Sketchup 7. I've been desinging a custom computer case for water cooling, everything was going fine until I tried to make a fan grill & import it into my case design. The grill I made is 120x120mm x 1mm thick, with 2mm holes spaced 1mm apart over the whole surface. When I got about half way through the grill Sketchup started slowing down & got real choppy. when I finished all the holes & tried to extrude the thickness to 1mm Sketchup stopped responding for about 1 or 2 minutes. When it came back it was real slow. Now if I try to import this grill into my case, the case now slows down & stops responding every time the autosave function kicks in or if I try to save or close the app.

This only seems to happen with really intricate high detail projects. I have been using sketchup for about a year & had no problems until my skills got better & I started to do very accurate high detail designs.

Is there anything that can be done to improve this?

I dont think its my computer, but you never know. I built my computer about 1 year ago & have no stability issues.

System Specs: CPU - Intel Q6600 @ 3.6 GHz (400 fsb), MOBO - Asus Maximus Formula, RAM - Mushkin PC 6400 4Gb @ 1066 MHz, Vid Card - HIS 4870 1Gb, Power Supply - PC Power & Cooling 750w Silencer, HDD - Western Digital 500Gb, O/S - Vista Home Premium 32 bit. CPU & Vid Card are water cooled.
