Great solution for inside Sketchup, Carsten.
If you're having trouble in Sketchup, you can cut up a model very easily using Netfabb Basic. It's usually much faster and you'll have less trouble with holes in the model. Here's a tutorial:

Mainly your model does not close in the sections because of the small open faces that were created after cutting the entire shell. That is why Solo told you to scale it up 10 times and even 100 times and then rescale to real. Perhaps you have a not powerful processor but if you wait long enough it will cut it eventually.
You can try having the model in a separated group or together with the faces. If you have it in a group you need to get inside the group and select the shell and intersect it with the model. If you have all together select all and intersect selected. After the intersection you should be able to select the individual parts.
Ah ok I see the logic behind scaling it up, small faces disappear rather than being bisected..
My processor is pretty good I believe, a 2.6 ghz core i7. I wish I could blame it on that but I think the fault lies with me

I forgot to mention that I had tried that, and that it froze up a number of times on me. I also tried the zorro plugin that works with the section tool and had some success, but couldn't then figure out how to close the meshes back up to make them manifold. drawing a line across the open part didn't work like it usually does.
when you intersect a plane with a model, what state is that model in, i.e. exploded, edit component mode, etc. If I am able to intersect, I am unable to then select one half or the other.

I have a Rostock Max V2 from SeeMeCNC that I build from a kit. It is a truly great machine- very fast and accurate within its class and unparalleled build volume. The drive train is comprised of 3 NEMA 17's and g2 timing belts. The extruder is a Bowden style to save on weight and facilitate its very fast travel speeds (300mm/s). Its especially good for tall objects, but I've had great success with all kinds of shapes. Its all open source, based on this rep rap branch http://reprap.org/wiki/Rostock. As such it is highly modifiable; a lot of people use magnetic joints and hot ends from E3D. I'm still running mine all stock.

Hi All-
I have a rostock max V2 and want to print a model of a boat that is about 50 cm in length. You can see from the picture that is needs to be cut in half horizontally toward the top establish a plane from which to print, and cut in half vertically across its width in order to fit on the print bed. Whereas I've done some pretty big prints, I've never had to slice a model in this way.
Any advice on how to do this?

here are a few examples. as you can see in the case of the store, I have everything arranged in situ, and then have a mirror model of it in the periphery, each with their own scene(s). this can get messy, but it works.
The closet carcass is a little neater, as I've taken the time to rearrange the mirror components into a 2D plane.
I've looked at maxcut, but maybe I need to take another look.

Hi All-
I work primarily in metal and wood- furniture and millwork. Usually I will build a model in Sketchup for the client, then rework that same model for the shop. If I am building with plywood one of the last steps inevitably involves nesting all of the individual elements of the carcase into 4' x 8' sheets, adding dimensions, and using the printouts as cut lists for the shop. This is especially useful when working with a directional plywood ie. sliced walnut, etc., b/c it retains a holistic sense of grain orientation for the saw operator.
So, lets say the whole model is a group of groups, which groups are comprised of components. Usually I will create the model to within 90% completion, then make a copy of said model within the same document, then rearrange that model into a 2D array of sheets, boards, etc. Using this method, last minute changes to the original model are mirrored in my cut list. This is essential part of my Sketchup process as a designer / builder whos clients sometimes like to change their mind right as the wood is going through the saw.
With that process in mind, now to my question(s):
-Is there a script / plugin that will 'flatten' a 3D composition of components into a pseudo 2D arrangement? I'm not concerned about nesting them into given dimensions at this point, though that would be nice as well.
-Is there a plugin that will label components as per the outliners description, and / or with their dimensions along a given plane / face?
Any and all pointers greatly appreciated.

I've just started using Fredo's corner rounding script and I must say it's quite amazing. I was wondering if anyone has a good work around for one of the known issues with this script, namely when you has an instance of a triple inside corner. I have a model which contains many of these. It doesn't need to be resolved per se, as these parts are not visible, but rather worked around. thank you.
