    • RE: Plugin Store, Plugins and Premium Membership...

      There might be some people that have this "Us Against Them" attitude but I have a feeling the majority view premium membership as a way to help SketchUcation grow more than anything.

      We all know that time is money and maybe talented developers can't afford to make plugins because they need to provide for their families. Having the community embrace paying a little bit to support developers will have a positive impact. Maybe I am dead wrong and this is the worst idea ever, but we need to give it a shot and take a risk. Lot of mistakes are going to be made, but like it was said before, the willingness to learn is key for this to work.

      I will like to make an experiment with a plugin I am currently working on. Not 100% sure how to approach this but I was thinking to test some suggestion JQL posted. Maybe add early access to beta for premium members to see if that motivates people to support SketchUcation by becoming a member(fingers crossed). However the forum topic will be public for everyone to see the progress and also collaborate with ideas. I am little nervous about this but we will see how it goes. πŸ˜•

    • RE: Plugin Store, Plugins and Premium Membership...

      If Sketch**Ucation** integrate this eCommerce feature into PluginStore they should be rewarded as well with a percentage of all the sales for further development.

      @ashscott said:

      Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) money is a big motivator. Making it easier for developers to get paid will encourage developers to "push the envelope" even more which will push SketchUp and the whole community forward

      The above quote posted here mentions money as a source for motivation to push the envelope and provide the community with polished plugins. This is true but apart form money I think the drive to learn should be the main source of motivation.

      This learning factor is sometimes the reason why developers (including myself) offer their plugins for free. Most of my plugins were made possible with the help of other developers and even none developers that provide feedback.

      There should be an option to share part of you earnings to the people that contributed to the plugin. This will encourage more teamwork and end up with better & faster product. People don't have to be programers only because a plugin requires more than just code to be good. Here is some example of people that can make plugin better but don't necessarily know how to code ...

      • People with good ideas for plugins.
      • People with UX design skills.
      • People that can make art work for icons & logos.
      • People that translate text to other languages.
      • People that can make documentation.
      • People that can beta test your plugin and report bugs.
      • People that recommend your plugin.
      • And many more...

      For me it would be sad to see developers not to share their knowledge because they want to earn more money with there plugins by hiding their code with SketchUp Scrambler. Or not allowing another developer to make similar plugin by claiming copyright infringement.

      Fortunately my experience with the SketchUcation community is been very positive and everyone seems to have the best intention to make SketchUp even better than it already is.

      Thanks JQL for bringing this important topic to the table. πŸ‘

      @solo said:

      Anyone tried this yet?

      No but apart from Ruby there is one called API which seems very interesting although I don't think they cover SketchUp API specifically.

      One thing to be aware is that if you learn Ruby that doesn't mean you will be able to write SketchUp plugins right away, because you still need to learn the Sketch Up API.

      In my opinion the best way to learn this is by modifying an existing plugin and asking question on Developers Forum.

      Here is great resource for people to visually see how plugins are made...

      Will soon provide another version that should be working no matter which version of IE is installed. Seems that using css for modifying input fields & buttons is not allowing people with IE 8 or lower to use it...not sure though.

      Seems Internet Explorer is not going to provide support for Windows XP and Mac operating sistems. Sketch Up might need to adopt another browser like chrome or Firefox in the future. πŸ˜•

      Hi,

      Uploaded another version to Plugin Store please download it and try to see if it works. The last version used HTML5 to play sound and that might of caused the plugin not to work with people that didn't have latest Internet Explorer version installed.

      Download Internet Explorer Here.

      If that didn't solved it please let me know...Thanks! πŸ‘

      Note: If anyone finds error on 'Ruby Console' please let me know. Here is how to get that information... Open it on 'window>Ruby Console' and then try running Canvas. If Ruby Console detects anything it should show up in window.

      Another suggestion. a toggle to be able to orient the component to the surface it is being dropped on, Or the ability to maintain it's "glueing" properties that were set upon the component's creation.

      I have this idea to be able to split a face with inner loops like windows by projecting lines in the direction of the edges to the outer loop.

      This is excellent idea! It will produce the cleanest geometry possible before dividing it even more. πŸ‘

      Maybe you think also to voxelize.rb
      http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36063

      but voxelize makes cubes only; it would be funny to split the volume in exact sub-volumes, and try to build the whole volume back again, using sketchup

      i have a 3d connexion mouse, and there is a game like this, to learn how to use it

      and in addition, splitting a volume in sub-volumes is equivalent to building a 3d mesh, for structural analysis...

      The plugin I had in my mind was not voxelize...it was one that only worked if you had SketchUp Pro.

      Anyways making a plugin like this would be cool indeed. Not sure if I possess the knowledge to do it myself at the moment but will see if I can experiment with the idea in the future.

      Thank you TIG will try that ASAP!!!

      ...TIG's suggestion works! Here is a code sample that you can copy & paste for testing...

      The only function the code does is to split faces from medians to centroid.

      def csplit()

      model = Sketchup.active_model
      ents = model.active_entities
      sel = model.selection
      faces = sel.grep(Sketchup;;Face)
      edges = []
      avg = []
      cl = []

      model.start_operation('csplit')

      	faces.each do |face|
      		edges << face.edges
      		###########
      		# Medians #
      		###########
      		lines = face.edges
      		lines.each {|e|
      		e1 = e.start.position
      		e2 = e.end.position
      		x = (e2.x + e1.x) / 2
      		y = (e2.y + e1.y) / 2
      		z = (e2.z + e1.z) / 2
      		cl << Geom;;Point3d.new( x, y, z )
      		}
      		############
      		# Centroid #
      		############
      		sum = Geom;;Point3d.new(0,0,0)
      		verts = face.vertices
      		n = verts.size.to_f
      		verts.each {|v| sum += ORIGIN.vector_to(v.position) }
      		avg << Geom;;Point3d.new( sum.x/n, sum.y/n, sum.z/n ) #/
      	end # each face

      	############################
      	# From Centroid to Medians #
      	############################
      	faces.each do |face|
      		centroid = avg.shift
      		edges.shift.each {|e|
      			lc = cl.shift
      			ents.add_line( centroid, lc )
      		}
      	end

      model.commit_operation

      rescue => e

      puts "Error <#{e.class.name}; #{e.message} >"
      puts e.backtrace if $VERBOSE

      model.abort_operation

      else # when no errors;

      sel.clear

      end # csplit()

      #######
      # Run #
      #######
      csplit()

      Look what happens if you test the code above with object similar to the one in image below. If the face has a hole in the middle and is not triangulated or quadrangular like in the 2nd row the result can be messy.

      The second row show much better result because the first object had quad face before applying script.
