Dylan that was taking a smaller barrel component either from Form Fonts or 3dwarehouse and scaling it up. I agree it looks too large but when your are modeling at 90 miles per hour sometimes you miss things.

I gather I could do some research on rain water cisterns and find something appropiate, but alas I'm to lazy.

Yes that pops better. I am just such a lazy old fart I just hit export>>jpg from SU and that's it. I suppose I could create Photoshop actions and batch process a bunch of images but to individually open and alter each exported image would be too much time.

I do agree that the punched up contrast and saturated colors are jazzier.

Hey I wonder if this is possible with Ruby?

well anyway thanks for the comments. Your opinion is quite valuable.

Not normally a me2 kinda guy but count me in for any sort of beta testing or just kicking the tires on this plugin. From the looks of it it will satisfy many of the lighting conditions currently unable to do in SU out of the box.

    • RE: Sketchup prehistory

I've been using Sketchup since version 1. I paid for a license at version 2. Ahh I'm having a trip down mamory lane.....

The basic premise of the software is so simple and still core to the programs success.

a line is a line....two connected lines connected together are just two lines...but three lines...the magic third line connected together creates a closed loop and blammo...we now have a surface....all manner of magic is now possible. We can extrude that surface to form a 3 dimensional object...we can move an edge to alter the shape of that three dimensional object....etc. The simplicity of the notion that a surface is just a series of lines, arcs, etc that enclose a plane is still intact. We can paint the surface with a material, we can cut holes into that surface, etc. Once you master the simplicity of the program and realize that your task is to define borders that enclose a plane to create a surface then you can model anything possible.

Now each successive version of Sketchup has added new tools and visual capabilities and surface modeling abilities but the core of the program since version 1 has remained the same.

The beauty and power of the inferencing engine is the programmers way to harness the power of the computer to essentially allow the user the ability to "sketch" or interact with the data in the computer in a way that was revolutionary. I'd wager to say that 75% of what I do on a daily bases with Sketchup can be boiled down to maybe less than ten actual tools or program functions. With a three button mouse and the ability to zoom and pan and rotate the view all simultaneously with out thinking about it allows the user to keep his eyes on the screen and his or her mind on the task at hand and not the computer hardware in front of themselves.

Sketchup has in fact allowed me to take my thoughts out of my head and present them to clients in real time. It's indispensable.

nicely done It's amazing what a simple program an a clear idea can create. I agree on the trans-peeps having the steps alter thier color halfway down is distracting. Try moving them all the way to the top of the steps.

    • 3d digital photography with bug lens by adobe and adobe soft

here is an interesting video about a newly developed camera lens from adobe. the lens looks like a bugs eye and can capture a digital image where the depth of each pixel is known. It's kind of cool and for architectural photography I think could be super. You can take one picture and with adobe software change the camera focus to anywhere in the image. I think its like an in camera epix file format where in addition to the rgb value each pixel also knows where in space it is and whether it is in the camera focus or not.

scroll down and watch the video

WOW I take a few days break from the group and Blammo a 7 page thread happens. I got the upgrade dialog today but I did not upgrade. I guess I'll need to read this thread before I press the do it button.

    • RE: Work in progress: Golfcourse

No worries Bravilor It's just an illustration.

      One simple method might be:

assumung that the topography is a component already>

make a simple rectangular plane somewhere flat anywhere where it will not be ontop of existing geometry.

double click that plane and make it a group

now copy that group and position it over the top of a sand trap do this in top view with perspective off.

now edit the group so that it is larger than the sand trap

now position and rotate etc. the plane until it is just underneath the grass surface for the entire area of the trap.

now edit the group and select all and intersect with model.

now erase the outside unwanted stuff

now paint the plane the sand color.

bingo you have a new sand trap bottom that is not as deep as the original one and its been trimed to fit the hole.

now you can edit the new "bottom" an offset it and extrude it and contour it etc as much as you want since it's a seperate component it will not interfere with your existing topography.

at some point you can merge the two together if desired.

again just a suggestion. I'm sure there are other ways to sculpt the existing traps to be more shallow at the perimeter but by the looks of it you are quite capable modeler so I assume that if you wanted to you could do anything you put your mind to.

    • RE: Work in progress: Golfcourse

I would hate to try and hit out of those sand traps. Usually there is a gradual increase in depth maybe some steep sides but not a clean cut extrusion like a swimming pool.

Wow truly amazing what true craftsmen can do with their hands and some tools. I don't even allow myself to dream about doing woodwork. I used to love to go to wood shop in high school and would love someday to find the time and energy to dabble in woodworking again. I really do admire all of you that have the talents to take raw materials and turn them into works of art.

Woodjoint As the others have said please don't hesitate to ask questions about Sketchup here. I for one will be glad to answer your questions if I am capable.

      Regards

    • RE: Voice activated Sketchup - it's here

I remember back in the days of AutoCAD 10....at work once I was so frustrated I pounded on the "ESC" key so hard I nearly shoved it through the keyboard. I wonder if you can train this software to to understand sarcasm. as in "Yeah that's right I wanted you to extrude the wall 10,000 feet... No really leave it there it looks fine.

hehe. As if my wife did not think I was mental enough wait till she hears me talking to the computer. Soon enough two big guys with a nice white jacket with really long sleeves will be visiting me.

OOps I had the day and month switched in my profile. My Bday is really feb 12th.

But unfortuanately the year was correct I'm getting older, At least I can say I'm in my early forties...and 50 is still more than 5 years away.

I will however always be a little kid at heart, which is one reason I think I like Sketchup so much it lets the inner child in me have fun.

      Coen

Sorry that is an American expression

      http://homepage.smc.edu/quizzes/cheney_joyce/rainreignrein.html

I meant the expression related the the leather strap used to control a horse.

      To explain the analogy:

the forum and all its members is the horse.

and the creator/moderator/administrator is the one that sits on the horse and controls the Reins. Someone or some people will need to "Rein in" or guide the forum from time to time.

To use another expression related to horses:

I think we have beaten this horse to death now.

However it's snowing here in Minneapolis and a nice sleigh ride would be fun.

heheh as you all get to know me you will find that I use expressions and analogies alot. unfortunately many of these expressions and analogies don't translate to other languages very well.

kwistenbiebel I'm glad to see that you are still here communicating with us.
