    • RE: Geometry Cut away Prematurely on Zooming in

Well to the wonderfully horrible clipping issue.

Complaints about it are all over the "dead" forums.

I do a lot of work with 100's of acres sites and large satellite groundplanes. Clipping is the bane of my existence.

Often time, I have to have two models, one with everything and one that just has the part of the site I am currently working on because clipping is so bad. Lots of component reloads to get the big model updated.

I know that other large site softwares display no clipping (Vue, for one) and I have never heard one reason for why Sketchup does clip. I would not hold your breath for this issue to be fixed and figuring out good work arounds is your best (only) bet.

I think this is a really interesting idea! I could definitely see this as being quite useful.

    • RE: Animation for camp project on YouTube

yeah, it's funny how a client can like the things you are not as happy about. I just gave a presentation for stage two of a development I am working on. The first go around was basically a big slideshow with a few parts animated. For the second, I animated the whole thing, which took forever, and looked pretty good if I say so myself.

The client watches the whole thing and the first words out of his mouth? "I really miss how you used a lot of slides in the first one."

Oh well, now it's off to cut a bunch of full motion out and throw in some stills. You just never know what people are going to react to the best, I guess.

You are right, the sound is most excellent! Nice job on that, for sure.

I hear you about the model starting to get that "not so fresh feeling" πŸ’š I am right there with you on this big development.

      Right on Shaun, looks great!

60 hour render!! Yikes! How did you accomplish the walking down the deck and turning the corner with no clipping with such a large ground plane? I have had to resort to doing my inter stuff with a smaller model exported out from the big model to minimize the clipping.

Have you thought about getting a high res satellite picture of the site and placing as your ground plane? Check these guys out for some options, if you're interested: http://www.terraserver.com/

I am usually not a fan of sound with my architectural animations, but the birds were really perfect. Not distracting, but definitely assists in putting you "there"

I would love to see the DVD version.

I'm not entirely convinced about the fade to linedrawing portion, though. I wasn't quite sure what you were trying to accomplish? Was it to distill the building shapes without the background, or showing different methods of display for future additions to the movie, or were you just experimenting? Usually, when I go to line or wireframe, I use it to draw attention either to something specific or to allow backgrounds to fade away for emphasizing something.

I thought the trees look great! Did you end up rotating/copying png's on the vertical? I use this technique a bunch (thanks Alan, if memory serves where I first heard about doing that).

    • RE: Sketchup 7?

For me, there are four critical things that Sketchup needs to fix.

      1. Animation export on Macs still doesn't work at all. It is unbelievable to me that this hasn't been fixed yet in 6, but I sure hope they have it right by 7.

      2. STOP THE BRUTAL CLIPPING!! I fecking hate clipping, hate it hate it hate it!!!

      3. multi-threading. I am about to spring for an 8-core Mac Pro, and it is depressing knowing that SU will only be using 1/8 of the available power.

      4. better handling of high poly models, especially the Achilles heel of foliage.

Even though SU6 was free (which was awesome, of course) I would be very very happy to pay for a nice and meaty (read not geared for google earth populating) update.

while this would be really handy, I also think it would be really depressing. πŸ˜„ Sometimes I find it just better to live in denial about how long some things take me.

I would use this tool a ton, though

Seeing Didier and Rick here sure puts some of my fears at ease.

      -thread hijack on-

And Rick, I got your email about sending you the crash log for page export but I have been slammed here for a bit and I haven't gotten to it yet. I will do so shortly though, and thanks.

      Cheers, Chuck

    • RE: Animation problem...

If your monitor size allows for a working window that is larger than 1200 x 900, then you will get some cropping on the sides.

A trick I use often is set my scenes with a pretty small window and then I know nothing will get cropped when I export at a larger size.

You can also export a 2d image and set the size to what you are going to want to export the animation (1200 x 900). open this still image in an image viewer, choose to display at actual size, and use this window to size you SU working window (when in doubt, make the SU window a bit smaller than the image) and you should be good to go.

    • RE: No 3d export

Ken, if you are on a Mac, I just went through all this two days ago. Check this thread out for some more info. http://www.sketchucation.com/scf/viewtopic.php?f=156&t=3286
      Navigate to: hardrive/users/library/preferences/

You may have some or all of these 3 plists : .com.atlast...........plist (before Google, the sketchup plist was this)
      .com.Google.sketchuppro.plist
.com.Google...............plist (if you are using the free version, I am not sure
      of the exact wording)

Trash them all and empty the trash.

I would go ahead and trash the application and reinstall, just for the heck of it.

Restart and you should be good to go.

      Hi Didier.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but I have been unable to access your site for the last couple of days.

I am using safari and I keep getting a warning that the server is not responding.

Any idea what is up? Anyone else having this problem?
