    • Producing a diagram to show the visibility of a viaduct?

      Hi there,

I'm trying to think of a way to use a model in sketchup to show me how visible a viaduct is from street level. This is a for a uni project with and currently looking at advertising potential of the bridge.

I have attached a quick plan of the model (probably not that helpful) and another showing how I envisage the visibility being displayed (in green) from a particular part of the viaduct (shaded black). The buildings surrounding are in grey. Hopefully this gets my idea across even if it is a bit crude at the moment.

My initial thoughts were creating a light source on the top of the viaduct which would cast shadows by the surrounding buildings but doubt there is a way of doing this without a rendering engine light source?

Does anybody have any ideas on how I could create the above effect or, even better, if there are any other thoughts on how I could do this I would be extremely grateful

      Many thanks for reading

      Marc

    • RE: Creating an organic mesh/web structure

Wow, thanks for the response guys.

It is something I have searched for on this forum already but not really knowing what search terms would relate to this organic web, it was difficult for me to find anything.

I have experimented with lattice maker already but will definitely take a look at the Voronoi + Conic Curve plugin and let you know how i get on, no doubt will have more questions!!

Jeff thanks for your suggested workflow, massively appreciate it as it is pretty much what i aim to achieve, i will have a go and see how long it takes me although bit worried that the overall mesh i want to create would contain thousands of the equivalent model you have shown.

      Thanks again!

    • Creating an organic mesh/web structure

      Hi There,

I'm currently in the final throws of my uni project and need some advice how to model an organic web like structure. I figured if i could create the line work then maybe i could convert it or add thickness but i would like to get it so it thickens at each node so it looks like each line is stretched from node to node. I have attached a quick sketch of how i picture the line work turning organic and i have also attached an image of a tree root structure that forms a living bridge which is possibly too complex and random to model but is the inspiration behind all this.

The Cooper Union building is a major precedent for my project and i have attached a couple of images to try and get across my point, although it is a far more rigid structure than i envisage creating.

The final mesh would be quite big, possibly 30 meters high, partly wrapping over and partly through an existing tower block and stretching out at the base. I have also attached an early concept model that might give you an idea of scale in which the mesh was drawn very quickly and is all straight lines just to get my point across to the tutors.

Any ideas on how you would do this or any advice on the best way to do it without killing my PC would be much appreciated.

      Thanks for reading!! ๐Ÿ‘

If you have no luck here, vIsit http://www.dafont.com as you can upload an image of the font in question and hopefully someone can give you a match.

    • RE: [Plugin] SectionCutFace

      Ah nice one TIG!!

Thanks mate, i can't believe i didn't check out the layers! i dont use them much and didn't think it would just turn the cut layer off by creating a scene.

      Appreciate the quick response too.

      Thanks again!!

    • RE: [Plugin] SectionCutFace

      Hi TIG

Wicked plugin, and dead handy for my Architecture course!

I have a little problem though, i can create section, but as soon as i create a scene afterwards the section cut dissapears. I have tried setting up a scene first and then creating a section cut but as soon as i update the scene it dissapears again. It doesnt seem to get hidden, just deleted? I have tried keeping it locked and unlocked. Is there a setting i'm missing when i save my scenes?

I have had a thorough look online and in these forums and cannot find anyone elese who has had the problem.

      Any help would be great!
