A family and a nation state are uncomparable, their priorities are different, the state is not obligated to take care of it's citizens as a father is. And the countries that contributed to the LHC are not the poorest countries in the world, and they have fewer issues than the rest so it is their right to do whatever with their money.
And i'm pretty sure that the EU spends more money on eco projects and eco laws and eco things than most, just think of the euro standards for engine emitions.
In the real world problems can't be solved by just focusing on one problem at a time, most of the time solutions for problems come from completly unrelated research and development, like space technologies permiated to douzens of fields and products. Think of the LHC's magnets, or super conductors maybe some of that technology will go into making better MRI's or some other gadget may prove to be the cure for the common cold, i don't know but why oppose something this fantastic...maybe one day those small particles will be at the core of computer hardware or some machine to regulate the global weather.
As others have said before those resources wouldn't have been sufficient to change global warming or world hunger etc, and people have the freedom to study and work in whatever field they like.
I guess these arguments are useless, cause you can't be convinced in any way..so the discussion is pointless.

I'm in favour of it because it doesn't cost as much money as the us military, it increases our knowledge, that's always a plus, and developed technologies we could soon use, i don't see the problem you have with this project, i bet there are other more ridiculous and useless projects out there that don't get your attention, because they are not that important but still eat up money, those are the one you need to battle with, and about the black hole stuff.....i have read articles on the net it's true, and i do undertand basicly what they are doing....and it doesn't seem to me to be dangerous, if i'm wrong i'll give you 100 bucks.
And because specilaist don't contribute to solving those problems now we should do what? Solving those problems you talked about are the job of politicians mostly, they have plenty of money, most of it is not going to reasearch by the way,....it seems to me that political campaigns are more ridiculous than these experiminents, they are totally useless and the amounts of money used for a bunch of guys are just crazy.
As i stated above and said in previos post the US army alone eats up hundreds of billions of dollars and nobody commented on that, you guys seem to be ok with it.....the US uses money like it's always in a war, and do soldier contribute to solving those issues?

If we would leave every decision to be made by the masses we wouldn't get any research done, do you feel you understand quantum mechanics? Ordinary peopel can't vote on things they can't fully understand.
Toxic I have a question, what could a quantum mechanics specialist do to stop world hunger or climate change?

Some time you have to stop theorising and just go out on a limb and do it, it's what makes us human and they spent 20 years making this project possible how many more years would you have them checking calculation for a very safe procedure, it's like spending 10 days just prepairing to cut your nails.

it's ridiculous to put this experiment in space, this has less chance of destroying the earth than the atomic bomb, and that was not tested in space at all and they knew for certain that it is very destructive. And the other hand that would have been virtually impossible and would have cost hundreds of billions , which would have really been a waste of money.

If you are still talking about money and hope to stop the issue here, the US military spends hundreds of billions of dollars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_budget_of_the_United_States. In light of recent events please tell me that that money is used wisely. Tell them to divert a few billion to education, medical care which i'm sure does't have budgets of such magnitude, there's your real world problems, not important scientific research which in the long run can help us create the wonderful things we dream of, no world hunger,no poverty, flying cars, space exploration etc, etc.

Another end of the world averted, now we still have to look forward to 2012 and the comming of the planet Nibiru with the Anunaki...and probably a few more dozens of end of the world theories.

If we would have spent resources only on "real issues" we woulld stil be in the dark ages. All important discoveries contributed to both technology and society. We can't just put on hold technological development and work on social issues only, if we do that we we'll never resolve anything, people always have problems.
And chango is right that money wouldn't have made any difference on an world scale.

Sketchup uses ruby scripts and has many new functions added on top the standard tool set, but hasn't a ruby that can make complex shapes off the bat, there is one for making procedural cars although it's in early stages.
