His techniques are now considered cliche in the viz industry just because so many people have copied them over and over.

Not knowing anything about a users scene, yes, changing the Fresnel IOR is what I would change initially. 3 is a good number to start with for highly reflective glass material, not ridiculous at all. You work back from there to get less reflection as needed.
