Meanwhile you can try out TIG's Split Tools: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43376

Awesome. I did find TIG's tools a few days after I made that post, and it sure does the job but too many clicks breaks the sketchup flow: need to do the offset, escape the tool, pick the face and then another command... getting it done with just one command would be glorious since I offset a lot. An additional efficiency I thought of was if the tool ended with the new offset ring selected so it's ready to manipulate, because after using TIG's tool curves get destroyed and you need to pick the edges and select loop which adds even more commands...

    • RE: [Plugin] QuadFaceTools

I've recently started learning to do quad modelling in other apps but these tools are great for doing stuff in sketchup! However there's a couple of tools I feel are missing which would be great to roundout QuadFaceTools:

      1. Offset with edges. Basically just an offset tool but that builds all the connecting lines so you don't have to draw them in manually to preserve the quad topology, which is a drag. I tried looking at all offset plugins but none seems to do this relatively simple thing:

      Offset with edges
Above offset with edges; below regular offset. (I'm not sure how the intersections would be though, but at least for simple offsets it would be easy)

      1. Quadify N-gon. Basically automatically divide any convex polygon into quads, being able to preview and choose division type before finalizing.

      Quadify
1st row is edge splitting but works with any N-gon, i suppose it would be nice to also make the extra loops.
2nd row is central but only works with N-gons divisible by two above N = 6
3rd row is grid splitting which is the best solution for large N values to avoid nasty poles.
4 and 5 provide other alternatives...

If these things could be added that would be awesome! Or if other plugins I don't know about already do this that would be nice too...

    • RE: Wish list for Sketchup 2018

+1 for all of the above.

Also (in order of importance IMHO):

      • DWG/DXF that doesn't break lines on 2D import. The current 2D export in particular is terrible, need to not break lines, preserve groups and components, layers and layer colors...
      • Fills / hatches on section cuts. (And a way to handle section planes better too... it becomes unwieldy fast)
      • Improved material browser / editor (macOS !!!) + basic texture mapping tools
      • Snap on imported vector PDFs. I could swear this used to exist and was removed some versions ago.
      • External Reference Manager, for Components / DWGs / PDF underlays so they can be easily reloaded / unloaded / replaced. Would be great for large projects and collaboration.
      • Multiple viewports / split screen. Like pretty much any other 3D modeling program out there...
      • macOS single window mode. Sometimes floating palettes are nice, but sometimes they make me feel like smothering kittens. Custom tool palettes would be nice too
      • Layer Manager
      • Improved dimensions and text

I know some of these things exist as plugins or workarounds, but they really should be added by Trimble, not force us to pay 3rd parties. Some of them have been requests for years since the early google era. πŸ˜’

      Crazy pipe dreams:

      • SketchupVR. I don't mean a viewer; I mean use sketchup in VR... That would certainly be an upgrade worth paying good $$$ for and prevent Sketchup from being abandoned in the future

    • RE: [Plugin] FreeDXF Importer

Nice plugin, works much better than the SketchupPro import. However, there's a few things I've noticed:

β€’ It does not respect blocks' scaling / orientation properly: blocks that were mirrored in the original DXF sometimes end up in strange positions (this does not happen with the other import).

β€’ Perhaps related to the last issue, sometimes I saw blocks that had the proper orientation but had ellipse elements that were rotated in 90 or 180 degrees.

β€’ Layer colors? Why doesn't it keep the DXF layer colors the way the sketchup-included DXF importer does? Currently I work around this by importing it with one (to get the layer colors) and then delete all the geometry/components and reimport with yours, would be awesome to not have to do this.

β€’ It would be nice if the import also preserved layer visibility, or have a toggle to choose on import. Currently it sets all the layers to visible.

β€’ Another toggle to merge DXF layer 0 to sketchup's Layer0 would be handy too.

β€’ Is it possible for it to keep polylines? I don't know if it's a DXF limitation or Sketchup or what. Polylines would be a godsend!

I'm on SketchUp 2016 and macOS 10.11.6 in case that's relevant...
