    • RE: Creating a fan blade - join arcs?

Looking back to your first post, if a flat blade is what you are after, and the edges can all be coplanar. Do your drawing on a surface, like the face of a rectangle, to help be sure it is coplanar. Make the component after you've done most of your work making the face.

Yeah, I think the 2 arcs were not coplanar AND I didn't create a face. It works now. I just got to make it pretty. 😲

      Thanks for everyone's help,

So, I'm trying to copy these blades on the radiator. How do you create the surface when I've created the component? How do you skin the surface?

      Thanks for any help

    • RE: Problems with modeling from Acad drawings

This is a very good post.

I come from the GIS (Geographic Info Systems) world. What we typically do when creating maps is construct a "topology". This is "cleaning up" your map. So, snap nodes, trim lines, snap line, remove duplicates. Very time consuming, but there is a decent work flow to getting your topology to work. You can run the various python scripts to find errors and then zero in on them and correct it. I believe in the 3D world some people will typically say the "geometry must be manifold", which to me is synonymous with "creating a topology".

      My 2 cents,

I can tell your working with architectural drawings. I'm going to say what most will not, and that is that architects are some of the absolute worst when it comes to drawing things precisely in autocad drawings. πŸ˜†

I beg to differ - engineers are the absolute worst at snaps, trims, etc. Not to mention there redlines on drawings...

    • Creating a fan blade - join arcs?

      Hi all,

I'm trying to create a fan blade for my TRANSFORMER radiator. I'm using the arc tool, copying, then joining. But I can't add material to the joined entity. I tried to make it a component, but that didn't work. The lines appear to be coplanar and joined at the nodes.

I would like to make one blade a component, then copy and rotate them. This is pretty easy in CAD, but I'm forcing myself to learn SU.

      Any help is appreciated,

    • RE: IMPORT KMZ

      Hey all,
I just wanted to let you know, there is a ruby extenstion that fixes the importing off kmz and kml files. I can't seem to use the search function on the site to find it, but it's there.

    • IMPORT KMZ

      Hi all,
I've tried several times to import kmz files, but the import always fails. I just downloaded the latest SU and still no luck. Do I need to get the pro?

Does anyone know if there is a setting or maybe in GE I need to do something? I've noticed in my GIS program, when I check geometry's of kmz files (after I've converted to shape files) there typically are nodes that are not connected, polygons aren't closed. Minor things that can mess up your drawing.

      thx,

    • RE: Survey of Geospatial uses in SketchUp

      Ryan/Chris,
I'm still getting my feet wet in SU. I'm trying to create contours in SU, either by bezier curves or splines or something. I still can't figure out how to populate the z-values. This is SF Bay (hunter's point), and I've been to the site before and I can "ground proof" the elevation. Seems to me that this should be very simple because you can toggle the terrain - so it seemed to me that their is underlying planimetric data that comes with the program.

Pardon me for my terms, but I'm an ARCGIS/AutoCAD guy and the 3D world is still kinda new to me.

      Thanks for any help,

    • RE: Plugins for managing different scales

      Chris,

Thanks for the help. I think if I'm on a FREE version then I DON'T have the option to change the import scale. I tried a couple of times.

There are a TON of towers in the 3D model warehouse, so I just picked one that "fits".

Just curious, I MAY get PRO after the new year, is there a plug in for paper space and creating sheets sets?

how do u scale a 3d model that you've imported into your drawing?
