My advice would be to skip the plugins for now. Get used to the inferencing and you won't need grids. You know when you're drawing or moving on axis by the color of the trailing line. Also make sure you're orbiting around as needed. Remember you're doing sculpture, not painting.

Also, when you see the trailing line hold down the shift key and that will lock the axis in as you draw.

I designed and built these bookcases as one of my first SU projects

      And also this woodworking bench.

    • RE: Travel Desk Model

Hi Jerry from another Jerry, You have some great models on your website and other good ideas. I downloaded your travel desk file from the forum but was not able to open it. Windows gave me an error that it couldn't process it. I noticed that it has been downloaded a few times and was wondering if anyone else has reported the same issue.

Here's the SU files. This was one of my first projects in SU so it is probably pretty rough.

Hi Keith, follow this link: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?q=routers&styp=m&btnG=Search

There is one on the first page; I didn't look at the other ones there may be some more.

Thank You Dave, I haven't been on for awhile. I'm designing a router table in SU now. I haven't used materials before but will experiment and see what I can do. Jerry β˜€

    • RE: Updated Woodworking Bench

Thank You Dave, I've used it a bit so far, but expect it will get a little bruised up over time. Maybe will give it some character. I've thought about finding a neat font and making a pattern to carve the year into the end apron. I saw it on a bench that Christopher Schwartz at Popular Woodworking did. Jerry

    • RE: Updated Woodworking Bench

I finally built the bench. I decided to get a butcher block top from Grizzly and made the aprons from maple. The frame is Red Oak with 1" walnut dowels for the through tenons and the vice is an older Craftsman that I found on Ebay. The vice position is because I am left handed.

Great job. I just made one myself recently. I bought a couple of hold downs from Rockler; I'm sure you could make some easily enough.

Hi Dave, I saw an article in the Sept. 2000 issue of FWW on the Jefferson Lap Desk. I've thought about how you could adapt it to laptop use by having the top fold out to the side or having a slide out part below the top for using a mouse.

    • RE: Posting SU pics

Hi Merc and welcom, That is a great start; I like the tool chest. This is a great forum to help you learn SU. One thing I have learned it to get familiar with layers and scenes; they will help you keep your model organized. Also, on the woodworking end of it check out the Design, Click, Build Blog at Fine Woodworking: http://www.finewoodworking.com//blog/design-click-build. You also might want to download models from this site and the 3D Warehouse and go through them to see how they are made. Jerry

      Todd,

Thanks for the compliment. I'm not sure what I want to make it out of yet. I downloaded the zip and like it. As Chris mentioned, I would be interested in using it too. Is it similar to the Cutlist plugin or a modification of it? Here is a file of the basic cabinet.

    • Tool Cabinet in Progress

This is a tool cabinet I'm designing that is based on one I found at Popular Woodworking. I would like to make 3 of these. One with shelves, one with drawers and one maybe shallower for hanging tools inside. BTW I just received a new book by Bonnie Roskes on Layout: "Google SketchUp 7 Hands On: Layout 2.1". It might have been mentioned somewhere else on this forum. Jerry

    • RE: Updated Woodworking Bench

Thank You, I plan on using 4 sheets of Baltic Birch plywood for the top and the rest will be fir lumber and the apron for the top will be maple. I would like to use southern yellow pine but it is not available here in CA. I did find one distributor, but haven't been able to get in touch with them.
