    • Materials for a Model

I just finished a model, and I need to give it materials to make it look like a proper building. I have done that, but I don't like the colours and I can't seem to find anything better. I know it sounds rather trivial but I'd really appreciate a second opinion on this and suggestions.

There are two sketches. The first is the real model. The second is what it's supposed to look like when one end is transformed into a sunroom /solarium. The coloured squares are supposd to be some sort of stained glass-type concept; the idea is to have some transparent, some transluscent and some opaque, to control the amount of daylight entering the building. Also, I'm not really sure the transformation is a really good job, but I'm stumped. I have no architectural skills whatsoever, but I need to get this done ASAP!

      Please, please help.

      Thanks.

      Hi Dukejazz,

Thanks for your help. But what I actually want to do is cut off the top part of the model. That face is a rectangle ... If you follow the forum from the beginning, you'll get what I mean.

Oh by the way, what's this cubic spline interpolation you always refer to? Sorry I ask so many questions. I'm really new at this. i had also assumed layering in sketchup would work the same way it does in autocad. apparently not!

      Hi Mac1,

thanks a lot for your help.

i seem to have trouble opening Sketch Mac1A. could you please resend it?
I understand the procedure and it would be applicable, for tapering the model, i mean. The trouble is the tapering has to be specific in terms of dimension, from 5m to 3m. I saw that yours was approximately right in the 1B file you sent. but i need it to be exact. I just can't seem to work it! also, how do I render a face as a wireframe? thanks

It's supposed to be a building - an art gallery. So I'm trying out different shapes. What I have in mind hasn't come out well yet. I'm think ing something in the shape of a brush stroke! #Sigh

lemme do the group thing and see how that goes...

Thank you SO VERY VERY MUCH! That video helped A LOT!

But I have a problem. Everything worked with this new model until I tried to intersect, and it wouldn't. Please tell me what i did wrong.

Hope your cold gets better. You didn't sound bad at all. no minus points πŸ˜›

Hi Mac1, I think you did that for the already extruded model. This is the one I'm having trouble with. The attachment I've uploaded is the one with the many bezier curves that would not weld. Even though I tried correcting the errors as you said.
It looks rather ugly and quite different from the one I drew in AUTOCAD and extruded using a single spline. I wish I could do that again with the proper dimensions.

I have. here's what it looks like now. Sorry about the ginorme!

Not complete though. I had fone through all the motions - and finally imported a spline CAD drwg to extrude.

I do want to remodel using the bezie curves. Does this mean that at the correct size and with the elimination of errors, wweld can close the cuves. Because I have like 6 or so cuves, and I use each start/end points in order to create the loops. Some blog says weld only works for converting edges to polylines. Any plugins or ways to do this if that is true?

      Thanks, Mac.

I guess I have to recheck the model. I looked it over a thousand times for any gaps but found nothing, and weld wouldn't work.
'd have to check it again.
And don't worry about the size. Not event eh tallest building is that tall. And I'm not looking for a Guinness. LOL. This was supposed to be the rough sketch.
I believe the extraneous geometry you're referring to is the portion where I pulled one of the section - is that what they're called? - but I just left it there. Didn't think it would affect anything.

    • RE: Healing Multiple Bezier Curves

Thanks. I actually have a post on this in 'Tapering in Google Sketchup'. I t did help a lot. Unfortunately the model I had was just a rough sketch. Now drawing the real thing with dimensions and to scale, it turned out to be that ugly plan in "gallery sketchup final". I'm hoping that extruding would make it look better, as in 'brush c-section' attachment.. That was the best I could do with bezier curves. #amateur.
Then I could proceed to taper it to look like the .jpg file. Hopefully my end result!
Would really appreciate any help I can get. PLEASE!

      This with freehand.

    • Healing Multiple Bezier Curves

I have a complex shape consisting of many bezier cures, as I found that this was the only way I could do it. I joined the start to end points so I could heal and form a face When that didn't work , I separated the start and end points and used the draw tool to join the segments. Still, no face.

My drawing is stuck until I get that done. I have tried the weld tool and t does nothing.
      Please Help! URGENT!

      Thanks.

Hi, Thanks for all your help so far.

Speaking of that same complex shape, I have been able to draw it to some specific dimesnsion using beizer curves.
However, the edges did not become a face as I had thought they would.

I have tried to trace it using the freehand tool, but this is extremely difficult and the edges are really rough. i also tried turning drawing a polyline around it, but it gives a whole different shape altogether.
Any suggestions, please? This is really frustrating.

There's a slight snag. It seems whenever I delete the top part that I don't need from my model. It affects the part below the face. I tried to avoid taking off the top face, and just deleting the lines that form the curves, still it deletes some bits of the lowwer parts. Am I doing something wrong?

    • RE: Tapering in Google Sketchup

Yeah, I figured it's better as just one slant. Even sketching it in different slants was difficult.

I'll work using the guidelines, though I've never used it before. I also wondered about the bezier thing but didn't find any plugins for Sketchup. I'll look up the index.

It's especially important that I get it to scale, more than anything else. I will work on it and let you know how it goes. This is actually my first experience with Sketchup. newbie

You've been such great help so far! Thanks a million. and also for your quick responses!

By the way, how did you achieve the second tapering?

    • RE: Tapering in Google Sketchup

No fair! Do tell. I willlearn with the native tools, I'm just running against time. A lil' cheat would be nice πŸ˜‰...
My shape is about 600m because I did not scale it from the beinning, but then I tried to using the tape measure tool and that wouldn't work...
And the flat face is just a rectangle, right? It already takes on the shape of the tapering. How do I get the exact dimensions for the face to tapered to, so that it intersects with my model to my specific requirement?

And most importantly, since I'm working with precision, what tool would you say to use to draw the face of my model, to begin with. Certainly not freehand tool...

    • RE: Tapering in Google Sketchup

Again, I need the tapering to be varied. that is from 6m to 4m at one end, and from 3m up to 5m at the other end. Does that make sense? Since it is just one face, is it possible to do that? Or will the tapering have to go in one direction only.
ps Sorry to be so bothersome!

Also, the tapering needs to have specific measurements, e.g. from 6m to 3m. That's possible, right?

    • RE: Tapering in Google Sketchup

THE FIRST WAY! EXACTLY! I'm soooo excited! Could you please tell me how you did it?

I meant the scaling by tape measure. I tried the Scale tool, it just shows grips I can play with. Not what I'm looking for. I think the scale by tape is what I need. But the problem is it doesn't seem to work with this model, and even if it did, i don't know how to get the exact scale I need, say 1:100. Please help!
