nice one burt, i have a couple of tips i think you might like
1 make some lines hidden (entity info box) like where you use two components back to back, like at the feet / knees. hide the joins so it looks like they are one
2 intersect the sphere (select - right click - intersect with model) at the 'pelvis' with the leg bits - this will show the joints here rather than the white blob look you currently have

hope these help - keep it coming!

why do boats always have round corners on the upper levels? it must be more difficult to build.... and model!

      thanks for sharing, great work

amazing thanks for the step by step images you are teaching me as much about boats as 3d modelling!

newb question: how do you make these lovely 'clay' renders?

Gaius you say the pay version - i could not find a free version - is there one?
(sorry i have posted on the sketchup forum http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup/thread?tid=622cedaca19034d7&hl=en too just to confuse you)
i only want basic functionality. i understand it's worth the money dave, it looks great.

    • RE: Fog Distance -what does it refer to?

      thanks TIG
you are beginning to show me how skp REALLY works πŸ˜‰
so i think i can move my camera (accurately) a little closer by a combination of the above info - i can tell skp where to put the camera, fog start and fog end precisely using coords and these 'commands'

      @tig said:

Why not move the for start/end instead ?

because my camera is a long distance away from the section cut which seems to reduce the precision with which i can set the fog. when the camera is closer to the cut i seem to have a lot more flexibility to control what is completely clear and what is fogged out. i did test it using your start / end tip tho, thanks.

so is it right that zooming in and updating my scene doesn't actually move the camera? 'walk' appears to be greyed out 😞

      thanks TIG that's really useful.

I thought the SU zoom actually moved the camera. But no?

me too...... i have a scene with a section cut - what is the best way to move the camera a little closer to the cut so my fog works better?

    • RE: Fog Distance -what does it refer to?

      hey thomthom

was wondering if you'd made this plugin at all? (didn't see it in your sig link) if you have, i promise to make good use of it!
it sounds like to poor precision of this has bugged you like it has me - if no plugin do you know of a way i can carefully manipulate the fog, using script or something?

      thanks

also, in response to above, there is a mirror command in skp but it's a little unintuitive. slect whatever you want to flip, right click, flip along.....
so to make something symmetrical, make half as a comp, copy it, flip the copy and snap it back into place. now you can edit both sides of your car / spceship / face simultaneously.

cool. did you build each component separately?
(also it would help if hidden geometry was turned on in wireframe, but do not worry!)

    • RE: First serious render in Vray WIP

yes nice work. i assume the coffee table is flat - but then why would it reflect the windows and screen as if quite convex? also generally the image is a little dull (colour not content!) but i always have this problem when i render so i don't know the answer.

and something about the design - it seems funny to go to all that effort to get a nice clean, simple room, and then leave the black boxes cluttering up the shelf. i know it's a style thing, but i'd either arrange them carefully or put them in one nice piece.

i like the style tho. especially colour of sofa and relationship to garden.
