I first saved_as a R12 DXF [25Mb!] - which retained geometry etc, imported it using mm as the units, *NOT retaining the CAD origin... and it came into the SKP pretty quickly.
*Some of the DWG's geometry is pretty far from 0,0,0 πŸ˜•
Here's my v2013 SKP version, looks like everything is there ?
      I zipped it because it's 5Mb.

You're a star. Thank you again for your time and skill. Talk about a convoluted path to getting the thing to behave itself.

I am pressing on now with the model at full speed.

      Have a great day.

Can you ZIP the DWG and PM it to me [with some details, like units etc]?
      I'll try it...

      Hello TIG

Excuse the delay. I have attached the original, larger file size drawing. Even so, at 2mb Sketchup should have no difficulty in allowing the file to be imported.

Good luck with your researches and, again, may I thank you for your efforts.

      Kindest regards

As well as 'purge' and 'audit'+Y... try 'recovering' the DWG in AutoCAD in case it has deeper seated issues.
Also, if there are xref files etc involved, make sure it is properly 'bound'...
Also try saving it as a much earlier AutoCAD release version - as DWG or DXF.
      Then retry importing that file.
Ensure you import units match the CAD units...
If the CDA file's contents are simple 2d geometry then the importer should easily cope with the contents, and any older release versions you make and import should work just as well... after all SketchUp is only interested in basic geometry entities like lines, circles and arcs, and the more fancy stuff that is available in newer CAD versions is ignored by the importer anyway.

      Hi TIG

      Thank you for your help.

I tried Recover on the drawing and then saving it as an 2004 version AutoCAD drawing after purging and auditing the file again. I ensured the units matched for the import and checked for any XRef's et al that might influence the import process (nothing in the original DWG file, so all good there).

Still no joy. Beginning to loose the will to live here hahaha!

But very very many thanks for your kindness in trying to help. Much appreciated.

    • DWG import hangs SU Pro 2013

      **Hi all

Used SU since 2007 and this is the first import problem I have had with DWG format files. I am trying to import a small (142kb) size AutoCAD drawing comprising simple 2D format entities. I have tried isolating the particular elements of the drawing I needed to import into SU, purged and audited the file and saved it only to have the import fail again.

I have tried introducing a 3D entity into the DWG in the form of a Solid Primitive Sphere to see if that would make a difference, which it did not. SU simply hangs and requires a forced close down to get anywhere. I am a licensed user with a group of Civil engineers in Oxfordshire, U.K., a former lecturer in AutoCAD Solid modelling and have trained bods in SU. But this is a puzzler. Anyone had a similar issue and found a solution to the problem?

Look forward to hearing from all you helpful bods

    • "Old" newbie

      Hi Guys n Gals

Thought I would say a quick hello. I have recently started a new job with a group of consulting engineers in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Initially as a 2D CAD technician, but then I was at a loss for something to do after issuing a bunch of steel detailing drawings and was hunting around the network (it's all still very new to me here) and found a PowerPoint presentation consisting of two slides. Each contained the same photo of a country road leading up to a junction with an entrance to a farm on the left. The second slide differed from the first in that someone had crudely sketched in a path and post and rail fence either side of the entrance. I thought I could probably do better (yes, I know...) and set about editing grips and being a little more creative with the fill textures. Job done, I saved a third slide and sent if off to the original author. He came around to congratulate me on the improved version(very lucky, he could have been thoroughly hacked off with the interference) and we got to talking about montages. I said I'd been doing this kind of stuff for years (since 2001) but generally used stuff like AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max and Sketchup, extoling the virtues of Sketchup's photo matching facility. He suggested I download the trial and have another stab at the path image. I did and now I am heading up a 3D department, the company having invested in two SU Pro licenses and I am trying out VRay for SU.

This looks like a great site for information and I hope to be a regular visitor here.

Take care and speak to you all soon.
