    • 3D Grass Component?

      Hello Forum,

does anyone have a tip regarding 3D grass that is light on the model and looks reasonably natural? I have downloaded some variants from the Warehouse, but I'm not quite happy with them yet.

Attached is the best that I found.

Thanks Dave, in that case I might just leave it as it is.
I thought there might have been an easy way.

    • Complete model is upside down -- how to fix?

As already mentioned in the subject line: my complete SketchUp model (with many scenes, layers, styles etc.) has just turned out to be positioned upside down.

I noticed that only now when switching on 'Shadows'. Can this be fixed by changing the coordinate system, or does the entire model have to be rotated, with the risk of losing, for example, viewing angles of scenes?

About the slowness I've read here somewhere before that it is because SU is using the inference engine all the time.
I usually hide all edges on imported highres geometry which makes it a bit faster.

Exactly. Note that if no drawing tool is selected (only a viewing tool like hand etc.), panning and zooming a complex model already gets MUCH faster.

If edges are not shown at all, handling a complex model for me jumps from around 3 jerky fps to a completely smooth ~60fps.

To me, this new technique is revolutionary. Sometimes I look at a SU scene I have created and compare it to the simple rendered version of it (Podium, Renditioner, NXT, LightUp etc.) and see little difference other than the gradient effect of light on a plane. It would be so much easier to use only SU for presentation.

      C'mon, no comments guys? 😍

      This IS revolutionary 😎

Yeah! I just created a (very rudimentary) light spot using this trick!

      (Of course it is 3D)

This is done using a white PNG with a linear gradient transparency!

    • RE: Import 3d mesh (not user's 3d models) from Google earth

Yes, terrain still works in 3D, as I've just seen. 3D has to be activated from the File menu after terrain import.

It would however be incredibly useful to be able to import terrain including the 3D items on it like trees and buildings. However it definitely doesn't seem to be possible without complicated workarounds like using 3D Ripper DX.

    • RE: Import 3d mesh (not user's 3d models) from Google earth

Same here. I can't believe that there are no responses to this question?

It seems that it is not even possible anymore to import GE terrain in 3D (and I mean only the terrain surface).

Let alone the zillions of automatically created 3D buildings that GE has started to introduce recently, based on the 2D imagery from different view angles.

So is there any word on this, or has trimble basically lost contact to Google, therefore dumping the amazing synergies between Google Earth and Sketchup?

    • RE: Antialiased lines with 3D-GPU

Whoa! I was not aware that these are actually settings. I thought that this dialog:

      http://img.gameru.net/img/58f26.jpg

...listed only video driver capabilities. However highlighting one of the rows DOES indeed change the respective setting. This dialog really should be re-designed using checkboxes!

Anyway, your tip already helped on my desktop with an AMD Radeon HD 7700 card. Same on the notebook -- when the Intel HD graphics card is chosen for driving Sketchup.

However, when I chose the Nvidia GPU from the Nvidia control panel for powering Sketchup, all the settings in the OpenGL section of the above dialog are ignored. I mean, there are those different rows with different Antialiasing capabilities (like 2x and 4x), but when highlighting one of them, closing that dialog and re-starting Sketchup, lines are still not anti-aliased but look like this instead:

      http://i.imgur.com/wFIfoPp.png

Is there anything else I can do to force antialiasing not only on the Intel HD GPU but also with the GTX 860M CPU?

    • Antialiased lines with 3D-GPU

      Hi Forum,

I have a Nvidia GTX 860M Graphics card which (of course) supports all types of 3D quality settings, for example:

      http://i.imgur.com/xMMqiGz.png

On an ancient Nvidia graphics card of mine, antialiasing used to work with these settings:

      http://666kb.com/i/b4se7www7k45fpy6z.png

However, I can't seem to find a settings combination with my current card where simple lines in Sketchup are antialiased.

Any help regarding the right 3D settings would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks
      David

I now have removed the checkmark from "save style, fog and shadow" from all scenes in the scenes manager, and this seemed to have cured the problem, for whatever reason...

There might be different styles to some scenes (how would I batch apply one style to all scenes, is that possible)?

However, in all scenes hidden geometry is definitely off.

    • Animation video export does not obey hidden geometry

      Hi forum,

I have a model with like a dozen scenes where in certain scenes certain geometry is hidden, and in other scenes the same geometry is visible again.

I already successfully exported some video scene animations.

However now suddenly, the geometry that is supposed to be hidden, does not get hidden anymore (in the exported video).

      Why is that so?

I have already purged everything, but that did not help.

Thanks for any tips about this problem.

    • Mp4 Animation comes out much too bright

      Hi forum,

I wonder why my mp4 animations exported from SketchUp 2015 are way, way brighter than the SketchUp model itself.

Any idea what to do about that?

...that unfortunately is not available for reading to everyone.

So what do I do to get at least my Space Navigator working in Sketchup 2014? It is like being amputated without.

Honestly, the obvious abundance of functions has frightend me off so far -- all the more since (additionally) I can't really seem to read what everything does. It's stupid I know, but maybe it is only decades of bad experience with garbled UI's that puts me off to even try and touch these tools.

As a brand new user to Fredo's tools I am sure that this is all incredibly amazing.

Only thing is that the GUI looks garbled on pretty much anything other than the standard DPI settings of Windows (which is much too low for nowadays high resolution screens):

      http://666kb.com/i/cm74vc86gocwgwb5h.png

This is with Windows screen DPI set to 125%.

Anyway, keep up the great work

OK I now use a tool called Actual Window Manager that automatically rolls the Material window up and places it up there right hand:

That should be the ideal compromise for me.
