    • RE: Replace groups with component

      Hi Gaieus,TIG,ThomThom

Thanks so much for your replies/help.

All the leaf textures are applied the same on all leaves, so i'm going to try both techniques, which will no doubt help my understanding.

I wasn't sure how much performance i would gain from using components, but thought it would help ☺ But yes, i would be handy to have that control.

I work for Landscape Architect so there is no escaping trees and plants! I'm just trying to strike a balance and make things a bit more manageable.

I am also trying to build a case for purchasing VRay - fingers crossed

I know i could just Google, but does any know any good 'ruby for beginner' resources?

Thanks again, i'll let you know how i get on!

    • Replace groups with component

      Hi all,

I've got got a tree with MANY leaves, all of which are groups and are identical(for now).

Basically, to improve performance i want to just use one component definition.

So, i'm wondering if i make a component out of one, if i can replace all the groups and still retain their rotation etc.

Any help would be great... otherwise i may need to finally splurge on that brain upgrade iv'e been saving for ☺

      Cheers

      Thanks so much Gaieus.

      That's a super handy little plugin ☺

Yes, the trees have come from XFrog, i'm trying to figure out a way to export the leaves as components.

      Thanks again

    • .3ds import 2-sided materials - HELP

      Hi all,

I am trying to import a tree .3DS into SketchUp8.

All the geometry comes in fine , but all faces with materials (leaves) have the correct texture applied to one face, but SketchUp default material applied to the other face.

From what i can tell, the problem arises from the .3DS only having a texture defined for one face, so SketchUp just applies default to it.

If I eyedrop one side and paintbucket it onto the other side it maps well, but only for that leaf as the other have different rotation etc.

So i guess my options are to correct inside SketchUp, or covert to a format that has two sided mats by default or something similar then import into SketchUp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      Cheers

    • Ambient lighting when Exporting to .3ds

      Hi Guys,
I have recently been exporting a few .3ds files from SketchUp and when i take them into another package i get dark faces. On further inspection with Deep Exploration i found that the ambient material was set really dark (almost black). I had a good look around but can't seem to find a fix, apart from changing the ambient in DeepEx. Any help would be awesome!

      Cheers
