    • RE: Reducing file size

If you're having trouble with your computer handling such a large file, it often is more than just file size to consider. The detailed topography is what is causing your computer to struggle. You want to turn off of much of it as possible so your computer is not always trying to manage all of it at one time unnecessarily. So here's my suggestion. When working on really difficult topographies, it can also be helpful to split it up into pieces and group each piece then move it on to a different layer. This was you can turn off the layers that have the pieces of topography you are not working on right at that moment. This makes life much easier on your computer. Like I said, this won't make the file smaller, but it will make it more manageable. Good luck!

    • RE: Join Tool?

I think you remake it using components the fit together w/o showing a seam. I had made a tutorial right after your first post. I'll go ahead and post it in case its helpful. It starts by showing how to clean up the intersection manually, then shows how to make seamless components. It might be helpful. Check it out. The part on making the component starts around scene 5 I think.

Or you know, Rick Wilson has a windowizer script available from Smustard.com you could probably check out. It might rebuild the wall in just a few seconds. The script is free.

Also, if you could upload the model that would be helpful too. Good luck!

Is it curvy? or is it pretty straight. It might be easier to remake it using components if the shapes are repetitive.

THat's awesome Coen. Glad you got together with some more people in Boulder. No pictures of Al Hart though? I've worked with him for a long time but still have not met him. I had hoped he would be at Basecamp, but I guess not.

next time tomorrow (v France). now, Coen, will you attend the base camp or whatch the football game?
      (what a mindless question - you are at 3D Basecamp! 😍 )

I sat in the session with these guys while the game was going on. They were in the back of the room with laptops open and their headphones on listeneing to a live radio feed of the game..... I kept expecting them to shout out each time Holland scored. They managed to stay remarkably quiet inspite of the 4-1 Holland victory.

      Chris

(EDIT) I should note that I did not see Coen during this presentation. It was Lukas and Leon (both from Holland) that I saw in the back of the room). Who knows what Coen was up to πŸ˜„

    • RE: 3DBC Tuesday Evening Meetup

In case anyone checks this before they meet, I am planning on joining up with everyone. I think I will get to the hotel in time to check in and get ready for dinner. My wife and kids are driving me down, so they will give me a ride to the hotel. I might even have room for 1 (small person squished between 2 car seats) in the car if there are any stragglers out there looking for a ride. At any rate, I'll be at the hotel or at chilis. See you then!

I'll be coming from work in Berkeley (maybe 1.5 hours away?) and I get done at like 6:00. So I might be running a little late. I'll try to meet at the lobby, but otherwise I'll get someones phone number and find out where you all are at when I show up. I'm getting very excited!

    • RE: 3D Basecamp 2008 Car Arrangement

I live close-ish and I'll probably be staying at home each night. For driving, I'll either drive my own car or take public transportation down or carpool with a friend who works there. If anyone else needs public transport info, don't forget to look into http://www.511.org. Hope to see everyone there!

And again, why on earth can't someone just fix the submit preview and save buttons? Make submit the biggest one and put it on the left. And Save is too similar a word to "send" which is also often used for submit. It always confuses me on this forum.

    • RE: Autocad Splines

That sounds more like a bug. Is this repeatable? Could you post a cad file that we could import and test? If it is something that can be repeated we can pass it on to to the SU development team as a bug. Thanks,

    • RE: Lets get this forum Organised!

I almost didn't finish reading your fist post Stu because I thought you were serious (before I got to the sarcasm) and I thought I was gonna be sick. I rarely show up here because I can't tell where "here" is. There is no main focus forum. So anyhow, I agree. Fewer would be cooler in my opinion. But then again, I am one of those who likes to see every post on every topic that comes through. I want the woodworkers and the engineers and the architects to all be posting int he same forum. Its more enlightening πŸ˜„

Well if you've only been to the east coast, you've gotta come to base camp! The west coast is SOO much better than the east. We're laid back and we have lots better weather πŸ˜„ Just don't tell the folks on the east coast I said any of this.

Anyhow I am totally excited about basecamp and too am hoping to attend. I just happened to move up near the Googleplex a few months ago to go to school at UC Berkeley, so its only an hour away from my house (whereas before I moved it was about 7 hours away). It should be awesome and I'm very pleased with the outline that Aidan provided. Most excellent!

    • RE: Flying!

I went in a wind tunnel once and it was great, but it almost pulled my arms out of their sockets (I have rather weak shoulder sockets). I'm pretty sure that trying to fly like that would actually pull my arms clean off!

      Sure looks like fun though.

Intersect with model often accomplishes the same thing. I'll admit though it is not really a one step boolean operation command. But it does do the trick most of the time.

The only other difference is that (in the Windows version) there is no location option in the Model info in the free version.

I sort of didn't believe you when you said that there is no model location ability. So I looked it up and sure enough, they took it out! I think that's crazy. Of course there is the workaround of opening google earth and zooming to the location of your model and then importing that terrain. That will set your SU model to the correct coordinates. But that's sure a long way around it.

    • RE: Free sketchup or sketchup pro?

Can the true free version import dwg files? or is it the Pro trial that is importing. One other concern is that the free won't output to dwg if ever needed.

Finally, if you are getting dwg files from clients, it seem slike SU might have problem with them if they are not trimmed down correctly. I don't know how elaborate they come in your line of work, but I can't imagine using SU to edit the CAD files created by my firm, just because of the detail and size of the dwg file.

I'm sure there are plenty who would disagree though.
