You must run the installer and specify SketchUp 8 when it asks for the path to SketchUp.

Thats what I though, but nothing came up, i'll re-install.

Displacement maps and be used as bump maps and vice versa.

At present I open the texture in PS, create a new layer above it, add fill - 50% grey and set blending to saturation.

This would be the same as applying a a desaturation adjustment to it.
Creating a bumpmap is not as simple as that though. Remember that white represent raised areas and black represent low areas.

Say you have a texture of a tile - the tile is yellow and on the tile there is blue print. If you simply desaturate that you will get a darker area for the blue text than the yellow surface it's on - even though the surface is completely flush.
Instead you need to extract the raised and lowered areas and generate a bump map that represent the surface topology. I some times trace over the diffuse creating the bump completely from scratch.

Though, for bricks one can often get away with really quick methods - such as desaturating and then increasing the contrast until the brick is white and the mortar is black.

Ok great, I was actually just starting to play around with brick textures. I will try some methods you mentioned above.

      Thanks

Is Vray 1.48 only for Sketchup 7.1 pro? or is it possible to have it working withing Sketchup 8 pro? As i've installed and I only get the UI for Vray in my sketchup V.7.1

    • BUMP Maps and the Like.

      Hey Guys

Just wanted to ask you what you would consider to be the best way to create a bump map? At present I open the texture in PS, create a new layer above it, add fill - 50% grey and set blending to saturation. Do you know of any other ways to create bumps? also, can the same map thats been created be used as a displacement map too?

I've been playing about with them and thought I get some views from more experienced users.

Anyhow, your input is very welcome.

      Thanks.

Ah - I didn't realize they where mirrors at first. Thought it was white wall.
hm... I'm not sure what's going on to be honest. Not seen that before...

It seems im prone to new glitches haha. I'll see what I can do, Y RAY could have been having an off day.

I don't see any particular unusual here.

No, the band of mirrors. Its showing the walls as white when the are clearly of a yellow tone

First question is, is it best to use rectangular lights as the ceiling lights?

A rather generic question that I can't answer. It really depend on the model and scene. That is the case with most things in rendering.

      @chips_007 said:

Second - if yes to above, why is it when I render I keep getting a faint black apprearance to all surfaces (when I've used rectangular for ceiling) and not a nice clean, lit up looking room....

To answer any of these questions properly it'd help if you posted some exampled of what you got. There are so many things that affect each other when it comes to rendering so the more info you got the better.
Also - some basic info on your settings would help as well, are you using Irradiance Map + LightCache? Or some other combo?
      Physical camera or not?

Ok, you are going to have to bare with me as im getting used to the terminology of it all. Right, Physical camera - No. Irr Map + L.Cache, not 100% sure what it is exactly, Irr map has standard settings, L.Cache I dont know. Should I use a physical camera? better renders with this? I have attached the image, it needs work but the point im trying to get across is shown so ignore the not so perfect look of it all, I just need to work out what settings do what, best combos etc etc, then I should be on my way....hopefully.

    • Interior Lighting - Help Needed.

      Hi Guys

Im trying to become familiar with Vray for sketch up and wondered if someone could help me with something? The room im doing is a bathroom, with no windows (so no external lighting), standard ceiling grid with ceiling lights plus other lighting under the vanity units.

First question is, is it best to use rectangular lights as the ceiling lights?

Second - if yes to above, why is it when I render I keep getting a faint black apprearance to all surfaces (when I've used rectangular for ceiling) and not a nice clean, lit up looking room....

any ideas? its driving me nuts!

      Thanks
