What part of Layout is associative?

I am sure this has been discussed but I must be missing something here. I have tried the free trial of layout. I created a simple model and brought it in to layout. I added dimension in layout. I moved some faces on the simple box and save it in sketch up. I went back to layout and updated the model. None of the dimensions moved.

Is this the intended functionality of Layout? I have to go back and manually update dimension?

I hope I am just using it incorrectly.

Thanks for the info and links, I will continue to look through the warehouse and some manufactures. I guess if I found one close I could just modify them.

How are most people handling components and materials?

I have tried to find them in the 3d warehouse for doors and windows and never seem to find the right one. I have seen several hight quality house designs here and I am curious if everyone is just drawing their own or if there is a better place to download them.

Same goes for materials. Looking for some better wood grain than comes with SketchUP

Yea I am familiar with lumber dimensions, these just happen to be rough sawn to full 3"x8", then left exposed.

I am not designing this part of the house, these are actual measurements from the house. I am modeling it as built now so I can see when I make changes what it will involve.

I guess I should apply the material to the faces and not the group/component so I can rotate it to get the proper grain direction??

Are you saying put each group on a different layer?

I have started modeling the small house that is on the property we purchased to build our business and home on. While the house does not fit our desires and not sure it ever could. It is just not what we a looking for. I can't see having it demolished. Could be good for family to stay in when visiting for extend periods, kids starter home etc...

So I would like to remodel the house.

I would like to draw/model it in some pretty good detail so the Carpenter and I will know exactly what we are looking for and the parts that I do will I will have already digitally constructed.

I have watched most of the new videos Nick Sonder so graciously made. But with out seeing the actual model it is difficult for me to see how much of the internal framing he actually modeled. I realize that everyone has different work flow and needs depending on what they are trying to convey. I am new and there for have now work flow.

I don't really think I need to model the wall framing, but could just draw a walls will doors and windows. But the floor I would like to see the framing as I will be moving some stair cases and really want to see how the framing is going to be handled since the second floor joist are exposed 3x8's.

I uploaded the model I have so far and would welcome any constructive criticism to get me on the right track. The way I have it drawn now I would have to basically re-sheet the outside to render it and not really sure if that is the way to go.

Thanks, I hope to starts soon. I modeled one barn we are in the process of building. Now I would like to tackle a bigger project. I still have a lot to learn on the orginization of the model. Barn kind of ended up an "outliner" mess.

I would like to start to model our existing land and structures. About 60 acres and 3 buildings currently. I have some more buildings and landscaping I would like to model so I can see if I like the layout and visual appearance before we start. Some large stone retaining walls, driveways, etc....

Where to start?? Do I model the buildings first?? set up the terrain??

I come from a SolidWorks mechanical background and had some preconceived notions I need to get rid of. I was under the impression that people modeled every stick of lumber in the house.

Can Sketchup reference external model maintain a link to update the main model when the linked model changes.

Thanks for all the advice. I think that I really need to just start using it more and become more familiar with it so I can understand things better.

I think the reason I prefer option 1 is that it forces me to do the problem solving on the computer first. This may change as I become more comfortable with the software.

Does anyone know if the mini book available on this website uses method 1 or 2 described in this thread?

I am very new to sketchup so I not really sure how to even ask the question. I come from a background in solidwork and work in manufacturing doing parametric modeling.

If I use the method that you described and something in the models changes how to you remember what details need to me adjusted since they are separate from the base model?

It sounds like you have geometry in 2 different places. While it may not be exact duplicate geometry it seems as a change in one place could affect the details that are in a separate file. It obviously works very well as is apparent from you post here I am just not really figuring it out.

I actually prefer the option 1. This option forces me to visualize how every component will fit together better. I feel like I am building things twice. Once digital and once for real.
