That is pretty amazing work. Just all that railing would have taken me longer than 13 hours I suspect.

out of interest, is this model made in two halves as components so you only need to model half of it?
same with the wheels etc. or is it just copies of linework?good model, especially for 2 days!
Sorry for the delayed response. I guess I forgot to check 'notify me' -will do that now.
It was two sided. I couldn't figure out if SU had some sort of mirror function. I could have cut half but then wasn't sure if point needed to be welded and so on. The wheels are componets as are the 'handles' and hardware to pull the cart though I realized afterwards that I need to put more thought into that.
On other news I postponed the ship hull I was working on -too ambitious for me it seems. All those curves had me going batty. I tested all the methods in the forum posts I was pointed at but it will be some time before I can handle that.
I decided to stick mainly to basic tools and blocks for a week or two so I don't feel like a loser.
I decided to try a quick set piece. I wanted to work with components, terrain, textures and other basic stuff. I will try that fur plugin I saw for some grass and maybe debris. May see about lofting some vines and also look at rendering and lighting too.
I am interested in knowing if there is a plugin of some sort that I can use to add noise, random movements to the brick components along the red and green axis? It would be cool if this exists, if not I'd add it to the suggestion pile. Give the wall and instant run down appearance.

RE: Curved Hull
@gulcanocali - thanks for the cool video demo of using your tools to do this. I'll be sure to take a look at your product line.

RE: Curved Hull
Thanks for the plugin suggestions and the video tip. I actually ended up spending a couple hours downloading and installing some of the plugins highlighted on this forum. I've been poking at all of them but think I'm going to start with the basics as I see there is a million ways to do thisand I'm like a kid in a candy store - I always marvel at the quality of user created free tools. Amazing.

RE: Curved Hull
Thanks for the suggestions. I installed SketchUp at work and am going to play with it for my lunch break.

RE: Curved Hull
I'm the 'swiss army knife guy'. I design and maintain a couple of web sites, do some very light Miva scripting (mostly hacking existing code samples), produce all the tradeshow banners, ads and other print media and a whole bunch of other odd jobs - a couple Flash ads, couple video tutorials, tech support for 30 users - you get the idea. It's like the old joke "I'm the manager. I manage to take out the trash, manage to sweep the floor, manage to ...."

RE: Curved Hull
Thanks very much Booman. Can't wait to get home to try all these ideas. If I can only convince my boss I need Sketchup to do my work .... hmmmm.

RE: Curved Hull
Ah, awesome - thank you. Guess I should have searched some more.

Curved Hull
Hi. I am wondering if there is a workflow I can use with SketchUp's built in tools to built a curved hull for a ship -or would I be better off using one of the plugins? If so can you suggest which plugins, that could achieve this, might be most beginner friendly.
I experimented with extruding a shape and rotating but know there has to be a better way.
I am shooting for something like this
though I'll probably lengthen the hull, work the head and add a few more details.

Burt's WIP
I hope this is the right way to do this, but I wanted a single thread to post images of stuff as I am learning.
This is day two with SketchUp for me and I am pretty excited. I decided to start out with a medieval cart of sorts to figure out how everything works. I can see I have a lot to learn.
Here is the wagon so far. I'll probably trash this at some point and start fresh as I can see I should have set up and organized several things differently.
PS. Wagon contents from the library.

RE: SketchNoob introduction - or whatever you call us ;)
Thanks again. I'll be a regular as I am motivated to learn.

Thanks for the welcome - and for the age assurance.

SketchNoob introduction - or whatever you call us ;)
Hello everyone. My name is Burt and finally downloaded Sketchup yesterday and working through the tutorials. I used 3D a little in school a couple years back but haven't touched it since. I wanted to get started and see if I can enough skills to be able to do some freelance work.
I went back to school about a year before the big economy bubble burst, worked in a Flash studio for about a year and then we ended up getting laid off. Now I work at a construction company doing marketing and design work - mostly magazine ads, web site design and tradeshow banners. It's stable but not the reason I went back to school.
So now, married, one kid and soon to be 53 and in many ways still trying to become a 'real' artist or at least make my living with art. Hopefully not too late.
This is what I did so far
I also spent about an hour looking at the chair tutorial for beginners and trying to figure out how to use arrrays to make the spokes of the wheel. Finally got it and made a quick video with Jing for any fellow novices http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpMqQIjcGmw
