i haven't checked out the forum in quite a while and there's a lot of new amazing things in the gallery since i last logged in but this one somehow stands out for me...

this style somehow reminds me of the videoclips of 'the gorillaz' because of its 'cartoony' looks..

after you did the render, what did u do for postprocessing in photoshop?
black&white linework on top in multiply- or overlay-mode?

      keep up the good work!

    • Cast shadow from transparant face?

Can someone please explain some things about casting shadows from transparant faces?
Sketchup-help function says transparent surfaces only cast shadows above 70% opacity but how can you explain this:

      shadows.jpg

Both 'bryce' and the cube are painted with the same material at 25% opacity, both are components with 'cast shadows' turned on and yet the cube does not cast shadows...

What am i missing here? Thanks in advance πŸ˜„

I would hate to try and hit out of those sand traps. Usually there is a gradual increase in depth maybe some steep sides but not a clean cut extrusion like a swimming pool

i'm aware of that phil, but the problem is that the underground is created with the sandbox-tool and the bunkers are 'stamped' in.... first of all i wouldn't even know how to fix that and second there are like 30 or so bunkers on the course so whatever solution there may be it's going to take me an enormous amount of time and effort to make them better looking... this will just have to do i guess πŸ˜†

thanks for the tips on the components.. but stuborn (and poor πŸ˜‰ ) as i am i made a few silhouets of golfers myself, they will also do....

i hope to post new pics very soon now, just the tees, more detailing arround the buildings and Photoshop-postproccesing is left now.... the file is starting to irritate me now because it's so rideculously slow due to the 'sandboxed-landscape', a LOT of trees and detailed buildings so lets hope i can bring up the motivation to finish it 😎

I couldn't resist. I just threw the people in at any size. Just for fun.

That's the one part i do not have the right components for.. people playing golf...
So if anyone has these and wants to share, or knows a place to download from, please let me know πŸ˜„ or else i'm afraid i'll have to use 'that guy holding two kids' again πŸ˜‰

The next couple of days i'll make more bunkers in the remaining unfinished holes, create tees (good tip), copy those trees arround a few houndred times, create a parking lot, create a driving-range and work on the detailing arround the buildings...

i have no reason to be bored untill christmass 😎

      thanks for the comments!

    • Work in progress: Golfcourse

      Hello everybody,

Here's a project i'm working on now, thought i would post some early pics and update my progress here. This is a design for a golfcourse i'm making...
As you can see i'm far from finished, but this gives a clue of what it could become...
The pics are very low resolution so excuse me for that, but suggestions are very welcome!
(how is the color-scheme? to much trees? set trees transparant or not?)

(by the way, thanks Gaieus, for helping me on how to model the terain)

Very nice! Especially now the detailing is coming! Do you have an example (like a picture or something) or is it pure imagination?

well you probably know about this method but just incase others reading this did not I thought I would post it.

      thanks phil,

i knew about that method and have used it for other projects, but somehow i always have a tendency to make my whole model on one layer without use of components 😳
even though i work with autocad 40 hours a week and constantly use layers and blocks.

i think my problem is that when i start making a model i cant wait to see results so i even start adding detail to one part of the model, while the other parts arent even made globally, very unefficient i know, but i need that for motivating myself to complete the rest of the model πŸ˜›

Must have been a massive file.

it sure is.... if i wanted to work in the model i had to turn shadows off, textures off and all the detail which was on a seperate layer off....

actually for some impression-views i copied my model, decided camera-point and deleted everything out of sight because it was unworkable otherwise... πŸ˜’

then the fun part to do, the impressions.... made purely in sketchup, so no post-processing in Photoshop of whatever (unfortunatelly πŸ˜„ )

Here's a project i did for school last year... wanted to go all out on the detail (though my study was urban design instead of architecture) but didn't come as far as i wanted because of the time schedule...

I had te resize the pictures because they were much too large, so hope you can still see something πŸ˜›

    • RE: Need suggestions for golfcourse

      Thanks Gaieus!

Some quick testing with the drape and stamp tool looks promissing πŸ˜‰
I'll post some pics when i'm happy with the results (someday, could be weeks, could be months πŸ˜† )

Maybe another newbie-question, but does the 'drape-tool' also work on non-sandbox-surfaces? If so it would be very usefull to create faces on curved walls, roofs, exct...

Thanks again and sorry for posting in the wrong section 😳

    • Need suggestions for golfcourse

      Hello SU-users,

I'm planning on making a 18 hole golfcourse with a visitorcentre in the middle of it in SU, but before I start I could use some advice.
My plan is to create the terrain using the sandbox tool and then add the tee's, greens, bunkers excetera, but I think I will run into the folowing problem:

When I 'smooth' the terrain it will be very difficult (if not impossible) to create the hole's, greens and stuff on the terrain-surface, to push/pull and create a different material on them, because the terrain obviously isn't 'flat'...

Does anyone have any advice/experience on how to do this? Like is it somehow possible to make the golfcourses including greens, bunkers exct. on a flat terrain and add height differences in the terrain afterwards?

      Thanks in advance!

    • Tv-like

Here's another one... i made it in just 5 minutes using two images. One 'the tv-frame' as a mask and a glass overlay... this one only works when you keep your model within te glass part of the tv, because else you can see the model trough the edges...

If I can make this in just 5 mins. then i suppose most of you guys can come up with much better πŸ˜‰

example on a random model from internet:

    • Vintage-like style

This is my first attempt to create a sketchup style, after looking for many hours on the internet i decided to try to make one myself.
I work for an urban-design-consultancy and wanted to prove to the 'old-skool' seniors who still draw by hand that a computer-generated image can match up to the 'warm' feeling of a hand drawn sketch (well, not entirely but we can at least try πŸ˜† )

      here's an example:

      vintage-style.jpg

      comments on improvement are welcome!

(ps. i wouldn't mind sharing this .style file, but i can't upload anything bigger as 512kb and the file size is 2mb so if anyone knows a solution, let me know)
