RE: Membership growing rapidly...
I think the ex-@Lasters are hamstrung by the just plain awfulness of the GoogleGroups GUI which, for various reasons, they now feel they have to use.
I can only imagine that the reason that the Google GUI is so inflexible is simply down to sheer complacency on the part of Mountain View.
At least the Beta testers still have their forum at the old location....probably because GoogleGroups is so primitive that no one has yet figured a way to actually hide a forum from public view....even the Pro group says that it is open and visible to all.
I have to say that although I finally managed to get into the Pro group, I haven't yet posted there and very rarely visit. The situation isn't helped by the fact that although I can open skp files perfectly ok both here and on the old beta forum, all I get at the Groups is a page full of code. Yes, I know I can probably r-click and save the link to my desktop...but that's quite cluttered enough already.
It looks like we are going to hit the 1000 mark here in the next few days.

RE: Great New Zealand TV commercial
Maori, Todd. Its the traditional start to an All Blacks (New Zealand) Rugby match. You get a double dose when they play Tonga.

RE: What is unique about your city?
I can't think of anyone famous who came from Liverpool.

Oh yes....Kim Cattrall.....believe it or not.

McLaren Technology Centre
A subject after Mike's heart...an eco-friendly factory. I was watching a program on this piece of ultra-cool the other day. It houses all the design and production facilities for McLaren F1 racing. It's built low so that it can't be seen from the road. The lake, which together with the kidney shaped building forms a perfect circle is used to provide water for both for the air conditioning and to cool the massive turbines powering the wind tunnel facility.
The interior has been designed, rather like the Pompidou Centre, so that all the technology and ducting forms an integral part of the overall design. Seems like a nice place to work.

RE: Local Brews
If you can get it, you guys should try some Old Peculier. There are some better Old Ales, but I think Theakstons is more generally available outside the UK than the others. It's not exactly drunk warm, but only slightly chilled...to drink it any other way would be a sin. You can't drink too much of it though, it's too flavourfull....and you tend to fall off the bar stool. Wink
Far better on draught, but you can't have everything.

RE: G'day from a new user
Hi Geoff,
You'll get a good idea of the general functionality of the program by watching the videos on the Help menu. There are many ways you could go about such a project. Here's a very basic idea...just click on each scene tab in turn.

RE: Who Said
Charles Handy said something similar...that we walk backwards into the future because at least we can still keep sight of something familiar.

RE: Form Fonts questions
The EULA doesn't say anything about removing models from files. If FormFonts material was included in client presentations when you held a valid subscription then those files can remain as-is. It would be quite unreasonable to expect people to reverse engineer their own work...supposing changes were called for months or years later, after your subscription had lapsed?
All that is required is that you stop using FF material in any new work if you terminate your subscription. As Will says, that simply means deleting any downloaded horde of FF material on your HD. If people used the site the way it was intended...as an easily-searchable on-line resource...instead of downloading everything as soon as it appears, they wouldn't even need to do that.

RE: Removing materials
It's a question of balance....the number of textures against the complexity (in terms of nested groups/components) of the model.
If you have a fairly simple model with few groups but a load of textures, the easiest way is as above...select as much as possible and paint the default colour. But you will have to burrow into groups and components separately.
If you have a complex model, then it may be quicker to do it all from the Materials browser. On the In Model tab, first purge any unused materials, then right click on any remaining ones and use the context menu that pops up to forcibly delete them.

New server...New posting date
I wondered why a few old topics were rising to the top again. Then I looked at the posting dates. The server transfer seems to have re-dated many old posts to yesterday's date. For instance, I posted The Meaning of Liff about a year ago, not on Sunday...same with some of Susan's posts like the laptop problem. It might be an idea if people only responded to brand new posts for a while.

RE: How to Set the axis of rotation for a component?
An idea similar to Justin's is to make little rotation "targets" on a separate layer that can be turned on and off. Then the rotation tool will automatically lock onto these, whatever the attitude of the component. When finished, you simply turn off the layer again.

The Meaning of Liff
A friend had a copy of this book in the pub the other night. We all thought it was hilarious...well, you would after a few pints, wouldn't you? It takes place names from around the globe and gives them definitions as if they were part of the English language. I found a complete version on the Net.

It took you long enough, Joe. We've all been hanging out here for weeks.

RE: Snacks.
I've switched from biscuits/cookies to veggies. If I'm feeling a little peckish towards late morning, I'll just gobble a few cherry tomatoes with maybe a lemon tea. I also try to keep some celery sticks or pre-sliced carrot in the fridge, with a choice of dips. For the weight-watchers, Tzatziki is one of the best, at only 20 cals per tablespoon. Hummus is twice that and Taramasalata is 3 times. Salsa is virtually nothing.

RE: Joke time in the new bar!Posted: Wed May 16, 2007 2:02 pm
Apple Computers announced today that it has developed a computer chip that
can store and play high fidelity music in women's breast implants. The iTit will cost $499 to $599 depending on speaker size.
This is considered to be a major breakthrough because women have always
complained about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them. -
RE: Lawncare for Health
You could always buy a goat. Then it would take you no time at all to mow the lawn, plus you get free low fat goat's milk as a by product. You get to keep fit by chasing it off the flower beds.

RE: The stairs are so much cleaner...
Yes, the little things make a difference. Mind you, I did get some pretty wierd looks from the people on the escalator in a local department store yesterday, as I overtook them on the stairway...running up two stairs at a time.
