So what's in 6.4.112?
-
I've tried the update on my macbook and
a) it installed as 6.4.120
b) the beachballing selection actually seems worseSigh. I hate to see a load of work not actually solve a problem.
-
I've noticed a bit of choking down too....
CraigD, what is your recommended graphics card size? I assume it will change from what was listed when V6.0 was released.
Cheers
-
I downloaded it and so far I haven't come across any problems at all.
Actualy, I don't see much of a difference.
Is there anything different? -
Hi all,
Where did 6.4.112 come from, I can only find 6.0.01313 ?
I just tried to install the latest upgrade, the install crashed with a catastrophic failure(their words)... now Layout will not open because it cannot seem to find the licence file.....Any ideas ?
Thanks
Paul

Paul,
101313 is our internal build number from our build machine. 6.4.112 is the Sketchup.exe version number. They are one in the same. Have you been able to uninstall and/or reinstall SketchUp to get it working? What part of the install process did the crash happen? Did you install over the existing installed SketchUp or did you uninstall and do a clean install of M4?
Gidon, M4 only contains changes to support the importing and exporting of ACAD DWG 2007. We made one Ruby change to support DWG exporting and we did some localization changes. That's it. No new features, no other code changed. Hope that helps.

I have many objections about working (google su team) smarter (at least). And please don't use @Last name any more.
I don't know what this means either.
Please tell us what you mean.
Thank you.

IMHO Sketchup progress is poor and very limited. @Last days left and never come back again. Sorry but I cannot express my thoughts correct because English is not my native language. Last update was the last drop. I will stay with pro version 5 and memories of a great piece of software that lost in the dust.
Thank you

I don't know guys...
I think we should be happy that some people of the SketchUp Team is participating these forums (in their free time) and try to help us out both with technical support and with information when we are lost. As I'm starting to know them they are doing this because they are at least as SketchUp enthusiasts as we all are. In the worst case they are here to explain (and eventually apologize for) a mistake they (or anyone else in the team) have made but for me it seems that they have done it correctly.
I'd really like to keep these guys here - not for my own sake but for that of the whole community we all are building here together (and yes; together with them) - so could we just calm down a little bit, put all the ranting and sentiments aside and if there is a technical issue with SketchUp, concentrate on it?
And English is not my mother tongue either so if there is anything misinterpetable in my post you can be sure that it was not intentional from my side. I don't mean to scold anyone or act like a moderator now...

I really agree with you Gai. I have found that this is generally a very constructive and creative forum. I would love to see it stay that way, I have learned so much from it.
I have noticed that negative ranting tends to gain momentum in forums and it changes the tone of the threads over time. People just start posting the same negative rants over and over again "the magic is gone", "Google doesn't care about us", "they never give me what I want" etc.. It drives away constructive and creative people that like the program and want to talk about how it is used. Your posts will decide what kind of forum this is. I am casting my vote for posts with some level of maturity and a constructive approach to problems as they come up.
That's my 2 cents. Does anyone else want to see a more constructive tone in our posts and less doom and gloom?
-
OK. My problem is that I want to see progress and further development for my favorite software. Am I wrong?
-
Absolutely, Sketchy...even though politics and SU6 are the only subjects most of us get negative about, I'm all for a moderate approach to problems as they arise...(initially :`)
And I'm sure most of this bunch will soon (if they haven't already) get over this update oops even though it seems, to me at least, a rather big rhin0ser0s to miss...especially since the "@last" has jumped on it so quickly: thank you again.
So in the spirit of being constructive I ask, Brad, Craig: What is being done about "unresponsive" nature of SU6 compaired to SU5...software-wise? And what can we do...hardware-wise, to help alleviate this ongoing (and, it seems to me, increasing) problem. I really would like to use just one version of SketchUp in my workflow...really!
Thanks, Tom.

Bruce, no such stuff on my machine...and I clean the registry (with free software, yes :`) since you suggested such several months ago.
It still may be my machine, and I am quite willing to do something (quite a bit, actually) about it...but the same task taking longer after an update, on the same day!, screams: code! But you're right, I'm only guessing.
Best, Tom.
BTW, my last post was quite serious, wry maybe, but not sarcastic at all. -
Bruce: 55 as we speak. Can you direct me to the best way to learn to take back control of my own environment...I'll add it to the arsenal. I don't want SU6 to just work (it works now) I want it to work fast!
-
Modelhead, I would love to see your house cleaning tips! I bet others will be interested as well. I would suggest starting a new thread devoted to that topic and give us a heads up on this thread when its ready. Thanks again.
-
Tom, please post your results. I am very interested to learn if your performance is improved/restored and also what your housecleaning steps were!
We have had many folks note a speed improvement with SketchUp 6, but there have also been a few reports of slow downs that we've been working on. We had the old problem with two SketchUp.exe processes running after accessing Online Help via IE and various security settings (not releasing the SketchUp .exe), but have solved that problem in an earlier maintenance release.
We still see the occasional report of slow performance, and have a very difficult time tracking down all the variables, so your results may be very helpful! Please let us know.
Also, no worries to all here. We have pretty "thick skin" (...an American saying meaning that we are not overly sensitive to criticism). We only want to help and learn. So to us, some of the bad mouthing seems hurtful and unnecessary, but we realize that people handle difficulty in different ways, and not all of those ways are pleasant. We try to look beyond that and handle the problem. Heck, that's all Brad and I deal with! Problems are our middle names!
On this journey, we're all sharing our experiences and trying to help each other. That's the spirit of online communities.
When I say that we are working "smarter" what I mean is that we are learning from our mistakes and planning for the future without repeating them. To tell you all the truth, any company transition is very, very difficult. It adds monumentally to the already difficult task of software creation. Our team is in a very solid position now, and we are focusing heavily on quality and not repeating mistakes that were made over the past year. This particular problem with M4 was totally out of the blue and new to us...and that happens. We've reacted and fixed the problem and have attempted to keep you all in the loop and to be as friendly and positive as possible. We know that it was a shock and we know how you feel...I myself had a SketchUp project to complete over the weekend and I too ran into the upgrade problem, so I truly shared this experience with you. We had a bunch of folks work this weekend to fix the problem. But that's what we do. We handle it, and go on with our work.
This message is meant to say that we feel your pain, and we do care. A lot! We ARE working harder and we are working smarter. And you can bet your _ _ _ that I'll mention AtLast because that's where the spirit started. That is why are now Google. The spirit and enthusiasm here is incredible! We care and we're working towards a better future and a better SketchUp. We love what we do regardless of the difficulties and problems we face. We also appreciate your feedback because it is important and helpful towards our goal to make everyone who uses SketchUp happy and productive.
Cheers,
- CraigD

I too think that Modelhead is on to something. There is this thing that SU is very processor-intensive, and using only the single one, that makes it vulnerable to slowdowns caused by other processes. My home computers are very neat his "weenie" one. They are about 3 and 4 years old, a P IV 2.8 GHz, Non HT, luggable , 1.5Gb memorywith a Nvidia laptop card, and a P IV 2.66 HT small-form factor PC, 2Gb memory with an ATI All-In-Wonder card with ónly 64 Mb of memory.
Both these run SU quite well, and the difference to my work machine (3.6 GHz PIV HT, 4 Gb memory, Nvidia Quadro 1400 card) is surprisingly small. SU 5 loads faster than SU 6, but in use both feel about as responsive, and both are significantly faster, especially with large models, than SU 4. My models are mainly quite small, though.
I run the Norton security applications, they seem to be quite resource-hungry, but apart from that they never have given me any trouble. At work they have some corporate system.
I haven't upgraded my video drivers for years, sticking to the tenet that "if it works, don't touch it". The manufacturers seem to regularly release buggy drivers.
The users of 3D software seem all to be in some kind of technological cul-de-sac. None that I know support multiprocessors except for rendering, and manufacturers have stopped developing faster singlecores.

Craig...I don't know how to be clearer than I already have in the previous posts here, but here's a copy of my response to Brad's inquiry that might shed more light(?):
My problems had nothing to do with dwg files. My concern is that the interface and speed problems that made SU6 not my primary program got worse with the update.
I have been using SU6 lately only to export the jpegs I'm using for renders in PSP, as the pencil sketchy edge is a really nice addition. I've even been setting up my pages in SU5 because the "beachball selection effect", as someone aptly called it, caused too many jumps into hyperspace when using the scroll wheel and/or the orbit tool.
Here is one more example besides the "graphic card"(?) boggles I described in my post: With clean ram (first action after opening this file) going to xray mode takes 3-4 seconds in SU5, took 5-6 seconds in SU6 before the update, and takes a full 10 seconds with the latest state of the program. (This backward progression makes no sense to me BTW...and in short does indeed SUCK!...thanks for reminding me in the other thread.)
If the hardware requirements have changed, please give me more specific information than the "carefull not to mention brand names" clues on the Google SU page...I'm getting ready to upgrade my computer and really would like SU6 to function properly (or as near to SU5 as possible :`)

Do I hear a 'I second that Coen'?
i second that, coen.
although i sympathize with all of you who are experiencing problems, i prefer to see the little fuckups for what they really are.
and this is because i prefer backing the SU developing team up in the hope that they will come up with an SU7 that is better than SU6 THAN to go looking for a new application to do the tasks i do with SU.
moving on to some new app means leaving all that surrounds SU behind. and this i am not prepared to do, because no other app has developed the following and unofficial support that SU enjoys.
