Leopard hang fix

SketchUp Pro 7 still crashing,
I am on a MacBook Pro, 2GHz, latest sketchup, OS 10.5.6
tried the ThawUp and still crashing.
I can create a crash by going into layers and hit add layer....
sometimes just SU crashes, some times the spinning beach ball of death..
any thoughts or insights.
next stop the Genius Bar.... -

Hi Inio,
I'm a pretty new user to Sketchup 7 using a MacBook running Leopard 10.5.6 & ur fix did the business for me as I was pretty close to giving up using SU7.... Thank you so much for keeping me sane!

Hi there,
Ater installing the patch provided, my sketchup 6 or 7 are still slow when dealing with models containing just a few a few extra layers and objects. I have not seen this happen in windows environment, even on Dell non-proffesional laptops like inspiuron 1525, that seem to use the same graphix card that my macbook does.
My computer info:
White Macbook 2.4GHz Intel (dual core, the latest model before aluminun macbook was lauched, bought on september 2008)
160GB HDD (55GB free)
4G RAM
Mac Os 10.5.6
Intel Graphics card GMA X3100I have tried to use either Skecthup Pro 6 or 7 (I have both), but it seems not to work.
am I condemned to spend more than 2000 bucks on a Macbook Pro or imac? Xan someone please help? I am an architect and have switched to macintosh recently. I got used to it very easily, but the bad performance for autocad 3d and sketchup have brought me many problems with my work.Any help will be muchly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Juliano -

This patch only improves the performance of certain interactive operations, like box-selecting. If these operations are not dramatically slow (making SketchUp hang or freeze for half a second or more) while others (like orbiting) are fast, this patch won't help you.

Hello all,
I am about to buy a month old imac 24 2.8, but I am concerned with this slowness. I had the opportunity to try the pc, and install SKP (version 6) on it to feel how it went. It was all ok, apart from a certain slowness in orbiting. Well it wasn't really slow... the orbit movement wasn't exactly fluid, it came in steps, not in a unique animation.I don't know what version of Leopard was on that machine (i forgot to ask, but I assume it is the latest), and I am wondering if this package will solve my problems or not.
Thank you for any answer on this!

As I said in the last post - this patch won't help general slowness. Just specific, unreasonable hangs AFTER particular actions (not during). In your case, it sounds like it was maybe using the software renderer instead of OpenGL.
-
that's strange, I had just installed the software on the computer :S
oh well, I'll ask to take a further look!

i must say the hang problem is not restricted to the card mentioned by barry a couple of posts before. my macbook pro has a geforce8600 and i have the same problem with the latest SU7 build (10035). i will revert to the original build (8656) to see if the patch will work.

Short answer: If you have Intel GMA950 graphics (early MacBooks and all Mac Minis?) and SketchUp is locking up after you box-select or just randomly after you try to select objects, this download my resolve the issue. The latest versions of MacOS and SketchUp that this patch has been confirmed useful with are 10.5.6 and 7.0.8656.
does it work for the latest build (10035)? is it restricted to Intel GMA950 graphics? it seems that the same problem afflicts other macs running 10.5.6 as well.

There should't be anything build-specific about the patch. It just causes a certain OpenGL call (glClear) to make an extra call (CGLFlushDrawable) when it's called after drawing to the front buffer. As long as SketchUp follows the same call pattern, it should continue working.
It's possible that this bug exists in other drivers. I'll test on a current-gen MacBook tonight if I remember. Other than that I don't have any other Intel macs available.

thanks. for what it is worth, i own an intel macbook pro 2.4ghz and its graphic card is the geforce 8600M GT.

Make sure you're not affected by http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377.
-
We also look at http://developer.apple.com/graphicsimaging/opengl/capabilities/ but you should be OK with that list.
-
Send me the model, steps to test, and time, and I'll write an automation script to repeat it and time it with multiple tries.
-
Look at Mitchel's 3D Basecamp presentation on working with large models: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnhkei2dSrY if it's not hardware related.
Hope that helps.

My Macbook Pro T9300 2.5Ghz,4GB RAM, VGA 8600M GT,Leopard 10.5.7 run SU 6 & 7 very slow,in rotate,move,....(working on a large model).I try Thawup,maybe it not work, I don't see different.
In Window,SU run smooth!! Maybe VGA driver support for MAC not good!
Any ideas ??? -
Hi Lehieu, you can try updating your Mac video card drivers directly from the video card makers website. Also, there's no need to write in bold like that. We can all read it even easier if its plain type. Thanks
Chris

chris,
there is no update for mac drivers at the makers' site. it seems that only PC drivers can be updated.
-
right. nvidia, for instance, doesn't develop OS X drivers and they are provided by apple. The driver updates are included with the normal software updates.
It's probably just a case of a big SU model acting sluggish and lehieu didn't actually say the same exact model is smooth with windows but not on his mac..
i'd be interested in knowing how large the model is (model info->stats) -

i'd be interested in knowing how large the model is (model info->stats)there is also the issue of model organisation. if he does not use layers and scenes to organise the model and its visualisation no graphics card will be able to handle it.

thank you....worked like a charm

I was reinstall MAC OS 10.5.6 (come back from 10.5.7) and install SU7,SU6,ThawUp (Thawup is only install in SU6 folder).Sketchup on MAC OSX still working slow (in rotate,view...action,fps is down). In Win,it's faster, smooth (on large model). I don't know the problem ?? Who can help me??
