Hello all
just joined tonight.
been using sketchup for a few years, I've learned enough to get by but I want to learn some new chops. I've gone stagnant in my learning, happy to find this site. Picked up a coupla things from the "tips for new user thread" already.
I've been using the program long enough to be an intermediate user I guess but it seems my skill level is probably "beginner".
I seem to be familiar with the components, groups, exporting 2d drawings and I've gotten fairly handy with all the tools but..............
short list of stuff to learn would be, layers, plug ins, space mouse? go to pro version?
layout?
I'm a cabinetmaker not a computer jock and an old fart at that. A bit intimidated by all the info on this site. Any guidance to particular posts would be welcome, until then I'll just continue plowing through that newby tip section. Thanks

Hi All,
Thanks for the warm welcome and all of the informative posts. Greetings from Houston, TX. This being my first post, so I thought I would share a little. I have worked or dabbled in a little bit of everything it seems. I'm an old man with a young kid inside.
Started with computers building Motorola, Zilog and various other 'computer on a chip' kits, mainly playing with 6800 and z80 series chips sets. Did a lot of machine code programming with dedicated microprocessor stuff from a hex pad. My how things have changed.
These days I'm learning to use SU to plan and build projects for the needy. My last project was an emergency shelter based on Paul Elkins plans found here: http://www.elkinsdiy.com/stationary-shelters/homeless-emergency-shelter/ My material and size requirements differed from the original so I had to make some adjustments.
I claim an intermediate user level but that might be an exaggeration. Though I can get around in SU, I have a lot to learn and will share what I can. I look forward to stealing all your ideas. Thanks in advance.
Phillip

I am using SU for planning and modeling woodworking projects. I started with SU 2 weeks ago so I'm definitely at the Beginner level.
My first projects have been a workbench and a washer/dryer pedestal. The good news/bad news scenario is now that my wife has seen the SketchUp models she is coming up with all kinds of new projects for me! -
Hi. I came across this forum to download some plugins, for what I've seen this seems like a good place to get plenty of help and advice. I'm an intermediate Sketchup user mostly using it for level design. I have improved my skills the past year and I hope to continue to improve them by reading the tutorials on here.

Hello, I come from AutoCAD and now I'm starting with sketchup because I think a great program. I was told about this site to learn and have resources and plugins. Thank you for allowing me to participate

Hi all, others have replied here with intros, so here's mine.
I'm Mark, I work at a pretty well known art museum in New England dedicated to picture book art. We currently don't have any 3D design going, and it makes exhibition design a rather clunky thing, so I am teaching myself Sketchup. I have messed around with it in the past, but I'm now trying to learn the neat, tidy adn functional way to do things. Hopefully with a little time each day and a little patience I'll be able to build a nice usable template of our galleries, learn how to make picture frames of various sizes QUICK, and import images. I'd like to create our cases as components too. Lighting in Sketchup--not so concerned about that for now.
Anyway, if anyone has any tips about any of this, particularly the picture frame and image import thing, I'd appreciate it very much if you'd point me in the right direction.
Best to you all, and I look forward to reading the forums!

Hi all, I think my first post got lost (I submitted it days ago and no approval--maybe this forum is dead?) so I'll try again.
My name is Mark, I work at a well known picture book art museum. Starting to learn SU for exhibition design.
Can anyone point me to any good tips/posts/resources for learning this?
Thanks!

Best way to find out stuff is to ask. Usually the quickest means of getting good advice around here. Welcome aboard

Hello all.
I'm new to SketchUp but beginning to pick things up. I Used the month free trial before upgrading to 2016 pro a couple of weeks ago. First time 3D modelling for me so with no previous experience, my learning curve will be steep.
My background is in home interiors and building custom made fitted furniture. With a passion for design, it is my aim to concentrate on the design side of home interiors now my body is starting to wear out.
I came across here from SketchUp Community (Scooter over there) with a recommendation of a plugin that @DaveR told me about. The Fredo Round Corner. Its taken me many hours of reading all the issues that others have had and many attempts at trying to install the plugin. But I succeeded in the end. I may well post up my 'computer illiterate' way at some point for those who struggle with zips and toggles or whatever else holds this stuff together. Another day perhaps.
Looking forward to expanding my knowledge with you all here.

Hi, Im november92 ,
I have used SU for years but because of too much other work there was not much time to keep working with it. Im still a very enthusiastic SketchyPhysics user. The latest versions I have are
- SketchUp 7
- SketchyPhysics 3.1
Now Im looking for the latest S-Version and the best matching SU-Version.
And.. after Trible's acquisition of the 3D-Warehouse I noticed a strong increase in the use of the forum. Which makes me very sad.
Has the use shifted to another place or is the warehouse still the best place to swap model? Thanks a lot for some helpful answer.

Hello! I am a new University user for SketchUp Pro. My interest in SketchUp is to create airfoils/wings for a foam cutter. Having some difficulty getting a straight leading edge using Simple Loft and am attempting to download CurviLoft. No success as of yet.
-
@november92: I can remember models from you in the 3D Warehouse. The best thing is to look through the posts regarding SketchyPhysics and MSPhysics to find the latest versions. Both plugins have been further developed and are very stable. MSPhysics is still under development and needs testers ...

Welcome Bruce! Just post your progress / questions in the SketchUp forum and see if anyone has some ideas to help.

Thank you,
CurviLoft appeared yesterday in the LibFre06 app?/menu item?
Thank you.
I was finally able to get a straight leading edge on the airfoil.
NOW on to bigger things! -
Hi all, i'm an interior designer and have taught myself SU with great success, however, I'm curious...does everyone do their lighting layouts in SU or layout? is there a tutorial?
-
Strictly speaking, I'm not a new member, as my first (and, until now, only) post was 5 years ago. But my second and third posts have been sitting in moderation for 24 hours now... I'm not that easily mistaken for spam, am I?

Howdy, just reg'ed and thought I'd stick my head in and say Hi.
This is all so new to me, I have absolutely no experience with any type of design software. I am a woodworker and electronics technician, mostly vacuum tube gear. Most of all the circuits/layouts and woodworking project I design are hand drawn. What actually got me to sketchup was I am wanting to build a new shop and I saw House builder and thought it was very cool. Really piqued my interest. I have no idea if sketchup is what will work for me, but it does look interesting.
If you have a suggestion as to where to start, let me know.

I have a lot of reading to do

Welcome, Bob. I'd suggest you outline what you need to design in a new post and take it from there.

I just started to learn SketchUp and wanted to say hi. I never used a program like this but when I saw what a friend did with this I thought it was just too cool not to try it. I recently became unemployed so I've got some time on my hands, so I'm going to give this a shot. I wish I had found SketchUp when my brain was a little younger but at 61 I still enjoy trying to learning new things. So with some perseverance and help from this great community I might just get it.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
