Hi I have a large Chinese vase as shown. I wish to turn it into a lamp. I wish to model the Vase in order to check how it will look as a vase. Is there any practical way to do this (Vase with graphics. Obviously I could scan it but I don't have a scanner. I realise there are some mobile apps but not sure about the quality.

      Any thoughts guys?

Then try scanning it with your phone using RealityScan or PolyCam.

Rub some talc on it first to dull reflections.

You could then bake the texture to a proper lower poly model with better UVs afterwards.

How precise does it really need to be in SketchUp? I might just eyeball it.

Low tech option: Use a profile gauge to lift the profile of the vase.

          Contour_gauge.JPG

Transfer that to a piece of paper and then measure the offsets from a centerline at regular intervals.

In SketchUp, place guide points at those offsets and then connect them with a Catmull Spline from Fredo's Bezier Spline tools. Create a profile to use with Follow Me.

You could also take a photograph of the vase showing the profile and import that into SketchUp as an image to trace.

Thanks Dave, the problem is not the shape, I would simply take a front on image and do the profile in SU, quite easy. It is projecting the graphics, without parallax error
