[Plugin] Universal Importer - v1.2.6 - 30 July 2024

Hello,
I have a problem with importing Blend files. There is a model in Blender containing one object with all faces touching each other, so the object is "water-tight", "3D-printable" and there are no "border edges" (every edge is connected to two faces).
When I import it to SketchUp, some faces stay connected but some disconnect, leaving doubled vertices living nearby but not touching each other. This basically makes a broken mesh.
Can something be done with this issue - either manually, or within the plugin?
I tried exporting from Blender to OBJ, then to SketchUp. It fixes the issue if I use ThomThom's QFT OBJ importer but introduces another issue - missing some faces. The BLEND model is in the ZIP archive because SketchUcation won't let me post BLEND files.
Hello. I don't know Blender enough to help you

Hi, this plugin sounds amazing! i installed but i keep getting error message?
Universal Importer Error: Command failed: "/Users/brettmahon/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2019/SketchUp/Plugins/universal_importer/Assimp/Mac/assimp" info "/Users/brettmahon/.UniversalImporter/tmp/import.obj" > "/Users/brettmahon/.UniversalImporter/tmp/assimp.nfo"

Universal Importer Version: 1.1.5
Hi, you have probably a file permission issue. Open a Terminal in your Mac then run these commands:
chmod +x "/Users/brettmahon/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2019/SketchUp/Plugins/universal_importer/Assimp/Mac/assimp"
chmod +x "/Users/brettmahon/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2019/SketchUp/Plugins/universal_importer/MeshLab/Mac/MacOS/meshlabserver"
Then reopen SketchUp.

Seems like a great plug-in, thanks for sharing this!
We have an fbx we are trying to bring in but we are not sure how to get it to be placed exactly where we want it and at the right scale. I think we could find the right scale factor to get it right but unfortunately I can not type in an accurate enough number (only integers allowed) into the dialogue box.
Is there a better way or different way we could have our model drop in more accurately?
Kind Regards,
Greg Hamilton -

Your software is very useful!! Thanks a million!! BTW, I don't know if you have thought of adding an function that it can import OSGB file format, it would be cool!!
Merry Christmas!!!!!!

1.1.6 version improves scaling accuracy during import and fixes file permissions issue on MacOS.
Download latest Universal Importer plugin from SketchUcation PluginStore.
Happy new year!

I'm trying to import an OBJ. I want to keep the existing model scale but the plugin keeps asking for the height of the model. Is there a way to ignore that?
Hello. You can't ignore that.
I would like to add this feature"cancel /height of the model/ will keep the existing model scale"although I can do it the other way around:
SU toolbar--Windows--Administration panel--Component--Homepage--Select import component you want-Deploy this component which keep the existing model scale:)Add the feature will be more convenient for me, thanks!

Hello.
It seems you are trying to import an .obj file that references a non-existent .mtl file. Can you please share with us these .obj and .mtl files?

Hi Luiz. Your problem is maybe related to glTF... Can you please share with us .gltf file and textures you are trying to import?

Compatibility with STEP models isn't very good. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution for the moment.

Hello Samuel,
I installed your latest release on sketchupmake2017 and can not use it as it is unsigned, please update your extension with a signed version.
Cheers Mate!

Unsigned does not make it unusable unless you set the loading policy to prevent it.
Please update your profile. It says you are using Sketchup 8.

Thank you for your reply, however, I do I know or turn off this loading policy? So I won't have any issues?? And I have updated my profile, thank you!
Cheers Mate!

I presume you mean, "I do not know how to turn off this loading policy." Is that correct. Go to Window>Extension Manager and click on the gear icon in the upper right corner. Choose Unrestricted for the loading policy. Restart SketchUp.

Hello Samuel/folks,
It appears that I am having the same issue with converting models, I looked at previous posts but still can't make sense of it all; as the file I downloaded from the warehouse was a 2017skp I tried to reduce the size but kept getting the same error messages as above.
I then exported the original skp file to 3ds and tried it again and got the same error message, as it looks like UI is still looking at this file as an obj and not a 3ds import. Is there a video/fix to this ongoing issue or am I just missing something!?
Cheers!
