Great model ! Two different "grungy" metal textures would really push it over the top. The "blocks" that hold the tap were a darker finish than the handles on a lot of these I've seen in years past.

Charles, I did think about using different materials for the different parts and adding some grunge but at this stage, I'm going to leave it as is. So much to model, so little time.

Really like these renders. They look more like a photo than a render.
I wish I could get some of the metal in my renders to look that realistic.

Thanks Dave. It's just a preset in Kerkythea although I did edit it to make it a little less polished. I think one thing that gets missed in a lot of renders of metallic or other reflective surfaces is the lack of things to reflect. In these there's the base the model is laying on, there are the two spot lights and a couple of blocks set up out of view of the camera. The rear light is blue. One of the blocks is painted dark blue and the other dark gray.(I'm not including yours because I don't know.)
Many times I see renders of models but they are just floating in space. Those always look weird to me.

Nice work Dave, looks great I agree with you that it needs a bit of grunge . How was the knurling achieved? is it a texture or in the model? I see the knurling fades out as it would be in real world machining.

The knurling is modeled instead of a texture. Adds a bit to the file size but since I used components for the diamonds, it's only about 2.5 Mb.

Was the knurling achieved working from a helix, then intersecting faces (or Similar)..........? If not that technique can you share?

To be honest, I don't remember exactly. My memory is a little foggy because I drew the knurling for a little brass pin about three years ago. I reused it for this tap wrench. As I recall, though, I started with a circle with 48 sides and used that as a reference for drawing a small diamond that I made into a component which was then copied to make a ring of diamonds (a diamond ring. ) which I then copied and rotated half a tick to make the interlocking ring. Then it was just a case of making a linear array of the diamond rings.
I had to make the knurling longer and of course increase the overall diameter a bit for the tap wrench and then modify some of the diamonds where the knurling runs into the tapered section as well as at the opposite end. You can see where it runs into the taper, below.

Yes, Pilou. It was rendered in KT.
Hornoxx, thank you very much. It's what we'd call a tap wrench. It holds the square shank of a tap for threading holes. It's more common to see the the T-handled variety and there are a few other styles as well.

I guess it's been at least that long with KT for me, too. Actually longer since I started with it before the 2008 version.

My journey to photo-real renders began using KT2007 version and 2008 version was a great leap forward. I was always know about the "phess" ( I guess it has been the great ancestor of KT)

BTW, I'll give you five bucks for a copy of all your texture libraries (mainly the wood stuff, I really suck at wood stuff and can never find what I need anywhere online).
