SketchUp in a browser. Pretty basic, but it works fine.

      Was this announced before?

It was announced before, it was in beta stage then.

I don't like the idea as it relies on a stable / good internet connection...

I'd like to see what happens to plugins as well.

It's still in beta and far from complete. there are a great number of features still to be implemented.

There's no intention of my.SketchUp replacing the "desktop" versions of SketchUp. I think it is a great idea and will be useful for some users. I like that I can walk up to any of the several thousand computers where I work, open SketchUp and show or make changes to the models I have saved in my file on Trimble Connect. Then, when I go back to my own computer, I can still access those files. And the computer doesn't have to be anything very special as long as it's got internet access and an up to date browser.

Thanks for the replies and updates!

I'm still hoping they make a version for Linux. As Apple is now Unix based and there is an Apple version, I would hope a Linux version will be offered one day.

I find the browser version interesting. As Dave R points out, it does make it convenient to be able to open a drawing on any computer with an Internet connection and make minor changes or present it in its native environment if needed.

This has been discussed frequently on the sketchup.com forum. Although Mac OS X is a UNIX variant, the GUI is proprietary to Apple and is very different from anything available on Linux. It would take a significant amount of effort to port the Mac version to Linux.

Yeah, I've seen those discussions and as an IT guy myself, I understand and do not blame them for holding off.

                  Still, one can hope!
