      Hi Chipp,

Save a Copy As does this.

      Hi Rich,
      Much thanks for answering...
But it's not really what I'm after. Want I would like is for it to

Save the file, but append an incremental number to it. So, if a file was fred.skp it would save it as: fred_01.skp, then it would USE the newly saved file. So, in the titlebar of Sketchup, it would show fred_01.skp until I incrementally saved again, then it would say fred_02.skp.

That's pretty much the workflow I'm looking for. Do you know if this is possible?

I think there's a plugin that can do something like that. Archiver sticks in my head but i disremember the author. Maybe TIG?

Edit: my memory is better than I remembered.

            ???
When I "Save a Copy As" there is no incremental save NOR is the newly saved version loaded into SketchUp. Am I missing something?

              Thanks Dave,

Almost there. Unfortunately it only archives and does not load the archived version into SketchUp. Still, it's the best so far!

Have you tried File>Save as...? You'd have to supply the 01, 02, etc.

                  Hi Dave,

Yes, that is the feature, but I'd prefer having it as a single click or keyboard shortcut. I've gotten in the habit in other 3D programs to just hit a keyboard shortcut and it automatically incrementally saves. I think I'll try the previous solution you suggested. Thanks!!

                    Save a Copy As

Saves a copy suffixed with #

It also keeps your working model with the original name.

So in essence the original is the master and the suffixed # versions are the saved steps along the way

Sorry chippwalters, my bad. I didn't understand what you wanted to say with incremental save and just couldn't resist the small joke... I didn't want to upset you but I simply couldn't resist.

I hope I didn't offend you and now that I understand it I see the usefulness.

More seriously I would advice anyone to do as Rich is suggesting, because that way you keep the same file name for the file you're working with. It's an old habit I got from CAD, when the files I was working on would be referenced in bigger drawings. It's still valid for sketchup if you break the bigger model in smaller parts. Like a masterplan and several houses...

                        Hmmm
Mine just saves a copy with the word "copy" appended. In any case, I'm using the fine Archiver plugin mapped to Shift+S.

Thanks everyone for the superb help!!

you should add mac to the topic titles and fill in your profile...

if I had known it was for a mac I would have suggested a using a 'folder action' that saves incremental copies without using SU to do it...

You can basically say, whenever a file in folder 'xxx' is updated, create copy of file 'filename.appended'...

I don't have one up my sleeve but it's very common to find these on the internet...

Well, it turns out folderactions can't do the job. They're evidently broke when it comes to 'acting' upon the same named file in the same folder.

                              I'll keep looking. Thanks anyway.

This would be a great feature. I know I know, "save as" works but it slows workflow. Better to have it automatically increment. When done for the day, the user can delete at will. Houdini and Touch Designer work this way and has saved me a bunch of times.
