Sketchup 2015 + Vray 2.0 and soon to be 3.0
-
I thought I would share some information with those out there interested in upgrading to 2015 from previous sketchup versions who run Vray. I was skeptical about the advantages that the 64bit version would provide for Vray aside from file size as the Sketchup website states that Sketchup will only use one processor :http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208.
My apprehension was that parsing times would not be cut down as this has been the biggest bottle neck that I have experienced, and from all the blog posts I have read, this seems to be one of the bigger issue that others face as well.
I ran a test render of an old model [Sketchup Pro 8 and Vray 2.0] and was very happy to see that the parsing time had been cut down by over 10 fold. Nothing was changed in the model - open and hit render. Some other very exciting news -
I had some issues installing the 2015 Vray 2.0 version that required a call from ASGVIS [who originally created Vray for Sketchup and Rhino - and is now part of Chaos Group].
The tech guy told me that Chaos Group is looking to release Vray 3.0 for Sketchup sometime early 2015 [dont quote me on this]. They had intended to release it by the end of 2014, this was put on hold as the release of Sketchup 2015 required that a new service pack for Vray 2.0 be released first. One of the main items that will be addressed is parsing time speeds. He told me that Chaos Group is working directly with Tremble to figure out what needs to be done to streamline the process. Another key item he mentioned is that they are in the process of regularizing the Vray interface across all platforms, so that in the future it will be easier to transition from one platform to another without having to learn the different interface. He gave me a little history lesson on Vray for Sketchup. You may already know this.
ASGVIS who is based in the US, contacted Chaos Group and asked if Chaos Group would support/bless the creation of VRAY for Sketchup and Rhino. Chaos Group was on board with the idea. After the success of Vray for Sketchup - ASGVIS was absorbed into Chaos Group. To my understanding they still operate as an independent company. If you receive tech support for Vray for Sketchup or Rhino it is coming from the ASGVIS office.Sorry for long blog - I found the information interesting, and thought others might as well.

I wouldn't hold out for a very early release of 3.0. As a beta tester I can tell you a private beta has not even been discussed yet. 3.0 is on the horizon, but I think it will be a longer timeline than that.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I just wanted to dispel any rumors and not get too many people psyched that 3.0 will be around in March or something.

That release date for 3.0 was a goal at some point. We certainly will try to get it out there asap, but until we are in beta for a while, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Just to clarify. Chaos Group USA is based in Los Angeles CA and Baltimore MD, and are part of the Chaos Group LLC. Chaos Group USA is not associated with ASG or ASGVis.
