Sketchup icon does not shows in Mac finder.
-
Hello,
I have file saved on mac i.e my sketch files but in my finder the icon (preview) isn't showing. Its shows as a blank icon also sketchup file saved from windows machine is showing some weird icon.
I have also attached the screenshot of the icon in this post.
Please check it and lemme know how to solve that problem.
Thanks
Amar

First off, for reasons known only to Trimble, SketchUp on the Mac does not generate or display per-file custom icons. There have been some workarounds discussed on these forums, for instance
http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16015
@driven also has an unpublished plugin to generate icons. You could PM him and request a copy for testing.
However, there may also be something off-kilter in your system. While there are not per-file icons, a .skp file should display in finder with the SketchUp app icon, not a blank page. You might try opening the Get Info panel and seeing what is set for "Open with".
Not knowing how you saved the Windows file, I can not hazard a guess at why it is showing that icon.

hi,
the next thing to try is resetting 'Finder', one way is to 'quit' from Finder menu then reopen it...some questions:
do they work when double clicked?
which version of OS X?
can you update to SU v15? [it's better than v13]the reason the two icons are different is Finder is trying to guess what the files are...
both contain binary and text
for the windows file it is being seen as a binary file
for the mac the text will have mac line endings and is being seen as a unknown text filejohn

John, you may have enlightened me about a strange effect I have noticed on my Mac: when I download a skp that someone created on Windows, it displays with the SketchUp via Parallels icon instead of the native Mac icon - despite the fact that I have set Open With to use the Mac SketchUp and double-clicking it will open it natively on the Mac! Finder and open appear to have independent ideas!

hey Steve
fwiw, the icons always look the same to me regardless of being created on mac or windows.
but then again, i don't have parallels installed (assuming you do?)@Amar..
maybe a silly question but just checking.. do you have sketchup installed on your mac? -

Yes, I have Windows 7 installed under Parallels on my Mac, and I have SketchUp Make 2015 installed on Parallels. I use this to test whether plugins I write will work on both platforms. So that's where Mac OS got the icon from. What's weird is that Finder displays a Windows-originated skp with the Parallels version of the icon even if Parallels is not currently running, and double-click a skp from any source launches Mac SketchUp, not Parallels. Of course, I regard this as a Mac OS issue, not SketchUp.

hi to all...
what do two show in Finder after downloading?
zipped...
renamed so wont clash with zip...
they should both show a real icon, unless the forum strips the mac resource fork...
after download in coverflow...

Hey John,
I am using the latest release os OSX i.e Yosemite and i am already on SU 15.
Also sketchup is set as my default application to open all my .skp files.
I tried increasing the size of the preview icon from view option in mac i.e frm 64px x 64px to some 124px to 124px and the sketchup icon started showing but again when i had gone back to 64px is showed me as blank.
It is not showing only in thumbnail preview and other than thumbnail preview all the view options shows the icon correctly.
Also to make a diffrence between files saved on mac and windows, mac saved the file with hidden extensions property hence it is showing as blank but when we save our files on windows pc the defualt extension option is set to visible, hence both the icon appear diffrent in the preview but ya when i increase the size of the preview icon i.e from thumbnail to other such as column or something both the icon appear correctly.
May be there is some problem with mac finding the icons of smaller pixels.

You can see what I mean about the Parallels icon.
-
@amarv91, can you see the icon from the zipped skp I posted?
@jeff, cheers
@steve. that is odd, it's certainly not a windows generated skp...
what does
xattr -l <path_to_file>
show for that file...
I'll see if I can find how I fixed it when I used Parallels, I did have that issue at some stage.john

@steve
I think it was this as I have an old bookmark for it...
http://kb.parallels.com/en/4718don't know if it's still relevant...

a bit off topic but since sketchup is now 64bit, shouldn't we be able to get preview thumbnails out of sketchup itself?
as in- Trimble could/should make some sort of QLgenerator (or whatever the applicable set up would be)? -
the preview is in there but it's a tiny raster image...
I think it should be possible to create a 3d preview for quicklook... -
was just thinking they could update it to give 512px (at least) preview icons with the view of the model when the file is saved/closed being the icon view. rhino works like that and it's pretty sweet.
idk, sometimes I wonder if the reasoning is because Trimble doesn't want to do it (for whatever reason) or if they just don't have the resources to work on things like that.
