Problem File - 5.6MB But Super Slow to Scale
-
This file is only 5632KB on-disk (which seems as though it ought to be fairly easily manipulable, like other files of comparable size on my system) but for some reason scaling it is impossibly slow (like, 30-40 minutes and still the scale tool isn't done with it).
Since its file size seems reasonable I figure there's something amiss with the object but have yet to figure out what that is.
And advice very much appreciated.
thanks!

Hard to tell based on so little info. What is it that makes up that 5.6MB? Edge and face entities? Textures? Do you have textures turned on or off? Maybe you've got some plugin that is causing a conflict. Maybe you've somehow corrupted this specific file. Try copying the geometry and pasting it into a new SKP file and see if you get different results.

It is geometry exported from Maya (nightmare time under the best of circumstances).
91,734 Entities
63,265 Edges
28,469 Faces
One single texture (color only) applied throughout
Copying and pasting into a new sketchup window is taking so long that I will have to get back to you on how that works out.
thanks!

What is the size [e.g. in mm or "] of this object ?
-
About 25'6" x 2'0" x 5" - I need to scale it up by a factor of approximately 30.5
-
What file format are you Importing ?
Can't you set its proper size when you do the initial Import ?
Sounds like cm v. " ?? -
The original geometry is created in Maya and exported to skp format.
I am not a Maya operator but the person doing the export indicated that she can't scale it in the Maya export.
-
SKP is not a file format directly exportable from Maya
So what is happening here ?
If it's an obscure 3rd-party Maya plugin-in, then your Maya-user needs to find if the Maya units [cm?] can be converted to SUp's inches during its export...If the file contains very tiny geometry that might cause issues.
How are you attempting this scale ?
If you use the Tapemeasure tool and pick two points that you know should be a specific distance apart and immediately type the correct distance then you are prompted to rescale the model and after Yes if rescales.
Trying to do it using Scale is more awkward...B_U_T after saying all of that...
Whay not export it out of Maya as a DAE format file.
That file can be easily imported into your SKP, and should need no scaling...OR alternatively DWG and 3ds are other formats readily exported from Maya then imported into a SKP...

In fact it turns out that the files are originating in Maya, and being exported to sketchup via the intermediary of Rhino.
The Rhino operator is adding a 100'x100' cube, and I'm scaling the geometry from that (ie making the cube 100' per side; it comes in at 100cm per side).
I'll try the DAE -> SU route and see if that works better than the Maya->Rhino->Sketchup one.
Thanks!

What file type are you getting to import into SketchUp?
-
At this point it is Maya files imported to Rhino and then exported as skps
-
Somewhere along the line you ought to be able to get someone to export so the dimensions are correct when imported into SketchUp. If not, can you get one of the other file types that SketchUp will import? Then you should be able to click on Options and set the correct units.
It wouldn't hurt to see if you can get cleaner models to import, too.
