After I uninstalled SU 8, SU 2014 is no longer defaulted to open SKP files.
I've tried right clicking an a file and choose "Open with" and check the "always open with" but nothing seems to work.
Is there a registry entry that needs to be added?

        check the registry for key:

        HKCR\SketchUp.Document\shell\open\command\(Standard);<short_name_path_to_sketchup>

        the key shows as:

        C;\PROGRA~2\SketchUp\SKETCH~1\SketchUp.exe "%1"

with the SU program directory residing in the "C:\Programs (x86)" directory (aka default).

alternatively re-installing SU14 should fix this issue too.

I've tried this also but it won't work.
I believe Mystic Thumb has taken control over the skp format.

I don't like saying this but for me Mystics Thumbs is -1

I experienced nothing but trouble with it when it came to file associations.

Download the free D'oh Book for SketchUp πŸ“–

Have you tried default programs from the start menu. It is different for different version of windows?

Start SketchUp 2014 from the StartMenu.
Then close it. SketchUp always re-writes the file association when it closes.
(This causes multiple versions to "fight" over it.)

                I'm not here much anymore.

Also the default value of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.skp
                  should be " SketchUp.Document"

I went into the settings for Mystic Thumb and discovered it had a "file overide" enabled.
Unchecking it made SU2014 to open skp by default.
