Reasons why to go on SU 2013 ...
-
There are several topics abut SketchUp 2013 with a lot of oppinions. Starting from "wow, I't seem nice" - this was my first reaction too, when I saw the new website. And ending with "Trimble is trolling us" - after one reads the updates and installs the new version of sketchUp.
Let's NOT do that here. I wish this topic to be a decent list of SERIOUS reasons why to switch from SU 8 to SU 2013... I'll go firstL
- If you are a PRO user, the only reason is the upgrade license. It's cheaper to upgrade now than buy later a new license.
- If you are a Free user, keep reading...
And that's all... I can't see any other decent reason... all the changes seem to be in the same line as before: Trimble marks their territory, they WANT us to know that SketchUp is theirs now.
But, if you can point to some serious reasons, this should be the place where to list them !
Good Luck! -
Because I have sent some questions to the SU Support team and are awaiting their response/clarification, I haven't downloaded the new version, hence I haven't tested it yet...
Although I haven't tested it, I do have an opinion and some reasons why users should upgrade...
It is up to the individual user whether the cost to upgrade can be justified based on this...
If you're using SU for professional purposes, the upgrade cost shouldn't be a huge issue...It's been mentioned that there's a lot of improvements under the hood...
This also means that the new version must be more stable as well as prepared for new features and enhancements...Further development on SU8 has been discontinued and focus will be 100% on SU2013...
If users want/need maintenance, a shift to SU2013 is required...From what I've read, most improvements have been made for LayOut (or rather it's improvements and features, which are more obvious for the user)...
Personally I use LO on a daily basis and I do look forward to see the improvements...Being a SU user since ver. 5 (back in the good ol' @Last days), I've seen these debates and discussions whenever a new company have taken over and/or a new version have been released...
After some time, the dust seem to settle and with exception of a few, users are generally happy with with the application...
(you'll always have a few users changing to another application and new users will join the community... I assume it's the nature of business...)Just my 2 cents...

The only reasons I can think of a Maker to move to Pro are
- Commercial use, now that they have made that stipulation.
- Layout
- .DWG export (maybe you could get around this with an .OBJ exporter plugin)
I can't think of anything else you couldn't do with plugins on Maker.
-
I use it commercially. The improvements in SU may not be immediately obvious but the cost of the upgrade for the improvements to LO make sense. A form of hatch has been desperately needed, now we have it, although the range of patterns needs expanding but you can do that with most graphics packages.
-
I've been fiddling with it since it came out, and while I understand there's not really new features, I'm excited about some of the UI and core program changes. It's been discussed in the developer forums more, but I think it's really commendable that they're turned attention to setting up a full C SDK, and that they've taken the time to make the UI work as it should. True, they're not new features, but I think they're important infrastructural changes that signify the degree of polish and usability to which Trimble intends to release with SketchUp in the future.
It may not have any new features, but in both starting up, quitting, and heavy modeling, it's stupidly fast and stable for me. As I said before, the UI changes are really starting to feel as if the whole package is beginning the transition to a much more tightly put together package.
Just my $0.02.

Matt +1.
2013 is way faster and more stable. A cold start of V8 on my laptop takes 15 seconds to load all the plugins. V2013, loading exactly the same scripts takes 4 secs.
It may not have lots of shiny new toys, but the way in which it handles scripts (which are shiny toys in themselves) is hugely improved. -
I use 8 Pro and never use LO. Is there any reason I should switch? Personally, none of the wish list items I would have deemed most useful made it into this version, so I'm not inclined to swap...
However, if it is discernibly faster I might be convinced to try it out so long as it and 8 can happily coexist l.

If you don't update you'll be paying full welly next year if it's something that floats your boat.
Try the trial it co-exists with v8 fine
-
Faster and more stable, so far that is enough for me.

It sounds like you're saying if you miss an annual update cycle, that you'll have to buy a whole new license. Rich, has this been confirmed? I haven't seen anything "official" from Trimble on skipping a release.
-
Speed and stability are deal breakers for me too (as well as Plugin reliability).....so for that reason alone I'll most likely take it on.
After all, there is a limit to how many cups of coffee I can drink each time the program hangs when I'm working on a complex model....!!

Are you sure?
On the 2013 FAQ page it says:

What happens if I decide to skip a year in this program?
SketchUp Pro commercial licenses never expire, so skipping a year of the program doesnβt affect your use of SketchUp Pro at all. However, if you do decide to skip a year, you can expect a modest reinstatement fee should you choose to renew your upgrade, maintenance, and support program.
So from that I infer that you'd pay $95 + some...it wouldn't make sense for them to charge more than 2x the annual fee ($95+95).
-
Thanks, Marcus. I know I've read that FAQ; not sure how I missed that part.
-
So basically Sketchup is now owned by Bain Capital.
-
The upgrade cost plus fee to me is full welly. Whereas 'all in' would mean total price.
Sorry for the use of slang.
Currently $50 is the moderate fee assigned to OS license change.
Getting v2014 at $150 to $200 is certainly a good deal if you need it.

Reasons why to go on SU 2013 ... ?
Well, its a case of Faith, Hope and Charity!
Initially .... a leap of faith and then hope that 2013 (and a bit) will deliver more next Sept / October, possibly at a 3D Base Camp. The upgrade price can be looked on as charity

If there are speed improvements for SU (Pete says so) but especially speed improvements for LO.
I just produced a set in SU/LO in v.8 and kept finding the slow rendering every step of the way to be the worst part of the whole process. Every time you make a change. Well you could turn off "auto" but how can you move forward if you can't check the results of what you just did?

Well, I think this is the best answer... I was expecting for it. I didn't wanted to say it by myself, but I was waiting to see when it will appear... as it's the obvious reason. Some speed improvements and small tweaks aren't features for a major release. It's like going with a flower and nothing else to your girlfriend's birthday .
So, I will take Mike's answer that the main reason to go pro with SU 2013 is to show some faith to Trimble... but (hello Trimble, this is for you ==> ) - Also, Trimble shall not disappoint the SU users community in the future.
-
I had some nasty restriction on one of my PCs in v8: it could not open more than 4-5 files simultaneously. v2013 somehow solved it at last.
