Can't find my new colors

'Compatibility Files' can cause unexpected issues - ensure your security permissions to all files an subfolders within the Sketchup folder are set to 'FULL'. This is particularly important for the correct installation of scripts and their subfolders of helper files inside Plugins, and also not forgetting the Materials, Components and Styles folders, where you may wish to use 'save_as' for some aspects of your models, or to keep 'libraries' of others bits...

Thanks Rich, but HUH???

Windows vista and 7 have this security/compatibilty feature whereby it protects you from making changes to certain folders.
It's a PITA. You can turn it off or as TIG mentioned in my reply manage it on a case by case scenario.
Did you ever see Inception? Where there's a dream in a dream which is in another dream? Describing this compatibility crap is the same as that.
check your default materials folder to see if theres some compatibilty doodad around. Click it and figure it out from there. I have mine turned completely off and don't know how to turn it on
You always see TIG addressing the plugin loading issue here with 'Do you have compatibility settings on?' or something close to that.
I'll hunt for a better answer

So.....I should just shoot myself?

Are you an Administrator on that machine? Can you check UAC settings in the control panel?
Did you try dragging all the .skm in app data to the red folder in sketchup location?
If any of the above put you off then you've answered your own question.
-
Yes, I am administrator.
Yippeeeee! I copied the skm's from app data to the Red folder. It worked!
Duh!
But let me ask you this, is my method of adding colors to the Materials folder flawed? Is there a better way? The convoluted method I'm using is not based on anything other than what I've managed to figure out for myself.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Saved me from going thru all that hassle of buying a gun

What you did was just fine.
It's just that the security settings on your PC are not correct...
Here's the fix...
Select your Sketchup folder's icon, right-click > context-menu > Properties [at the end] > Security-tab.
Find 'yourself' in the list and highlight that entry, click Edit and set the permissions to FULL, i.e. all ticked...
You will probably need to be an 'administrator' to do this.
I set everyone's permissions to FULL !
Check the changes have been applied.
The FULL permissions settings should ripple down to all of the folders contents - files and subfolders.
If NOT then try to manually fix the permissions to FULL for the Plugins, Materials, Components and Styles folders... -
Did as you suggested, now all my new colors are going directly into my SU Materials folders.
You are the best!
-
Well, I may have to shop for that gun after all.
Like I said, the new colors are showing up in the correct folder on the hard drive. BUT....they aren't showing up in SU. Aren't showing up in the APP folder either. Now how can they show up in the Materials folder in the SU program, but not show up when I run SU? Makes no sense to me at all.
Any ideas?
-
In the Materials Palette can you click the 'Details' icon and pick 'Open or Create collection'
Navigate to the Red folder
-
Well, it seems to be working now, new colors are going directly to the right folder, and are showing up in SU. Not sure how this came about though. After much fuss and googling, managed to change security permissions back to where they were, which should have meant that the new colors were going to the App folder as they were originally, but like I said, they are going to the folder in the SU program and show up in SU. I really hate it when a problem gets solved but I don't know what solved it. Oh well.
Thanks again.
