It's not supposed to be possible, but I have several faces without edges. The way I created them (I think) is by creating a box, then grouping each of the four sides separately, then moving those four sides to a new layer and hiding that layer. Now, I can't find the 'edge' of the 'floor' or 'ceiling' faces. It shows 'on face', but does not snap to the edge or corner. I need to somehow trace the edges back onto the floor but I can't figure out how. Any suggestions?

Oh, and "Martin says this is the best newbie forum on Earth."

You're using layers incorrectly. I would suggest that you read the online help files on the topic of layers.

In a nutshell, layers control only the visibility of the entities on the layer but they do not separate entities. Thus you can have edges on one layer and the face on another.

Make your life easy and follow Google's recommendations about the way to use layers. Leave layers on Layer 0.

Enable "Show" of the layer where you send them ?
In Su you send only the visivility not the geometry !

You can have edgeless faces sometimes without involving layers under certain circumstances, but usually with some complex geometry and after performing some contortions with it.
I have noticed this from time to time, but I have not taken the trouble to note what circumstances produce it. I am sure that others have come across this.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

Thanks all. That was it. Any tips for the best way to take two connected faces and put each on a different layer without creating them separately?

I'm assuming being on the newbie channel means not having to say "sorry if this is a stupid question" 😆

I do not exactly now what you mean by this but if you mean NOT making them separate groups/components first then please, forget it.

Don't associate SketchUp layers behaving like PhotoShop.

Using layers to isolate raw geometry is similar to baking a cake with explosives.

Geometry wrapped in a protective bubble like a group or component is fine to place on a layer. Layers primarily handle visibility.

I have with imported OBJ's with TIG's ruby. mainly I find hidden edges and vertices that I have to manually draw in then delete to get rid of the edgeless faces.. no layers involved...

                      😆

Two faces touching at a point or sharing an edge or more. Double click on each face and group (or componentize), one after the other. Assign one of the groups to a different layer. The shared edge(s) goes with each face into the group. With both layers "visible" the appearance is no different, but they will not act like related geometry any longer.
