Scene Tabs / Preferences
-
Hello,
I've been using SU for some time and this one issue is one that I can never find an answer to; I've looked a bit on the site, but never exactly this problem:
I prefer to keep my Scene Tabs hidden and use only the Scene Manager window, to maximize the view window. However, when I open a new file (now in SU8/Win), it will always bring back the tabs. I've tried removing them and saving my preference file, but this does not seem to help. Please tell me someone else here has run into this.
Thanks!

Hello and welcome to SCF!
Well, I do display scene tabs even if there is just one so have never encountered this issue but have just checked and you are right; no matter what I do (i.e. say hide them in an empty file and create a new template based on the settings) they come back with a new file.
The problem is that there doesn't seem to be anywhere to set and save this setting. It is not a style setting (like section cut/plane or guide visibility) nor a Model info setting (which would be saved with the model).
So unless someone comes up with an idea I did not think about (I even tried to save it with the toolbar positions), I think you have to live with hiding them in each model manually.

Is it possible that your default template was created with scene tabs and that you are deleting them in the file you are working on? If this is the case, you need to deleting the tabs in a fresh, blank model and then use File>Save as Template to save it. Make sure Use as Default is ticked. Of course deleting the scene tabs will remove them from the Scene Manager list as well.

In my reading it is not about deleting them but hiding (View menu). So basically he needs a "template" (although it does not seem to be a model level setting) where there are scenes but the tabs are hidden.

My mistake. As you say, it doesn't appear that there's a setting related to the template for hiding the scene tabs. I've never wanted to hide the scene tabs before so I've not tried it until now. Curious.

You can have a SKP with scene-tabs, but have them hidden simply by using the view menu show-scenes toggle.
BUT if you save that SKP []as a template] then that setting is ignored on it opening as a new SKP.
It seems that scene-tabs are always shown at startup whatever the view menu status for show-scenes toggle is, either in Sketchup OR the SKP itself. Indeed it can show scene-tabs as hidden in the menu whilst ignoring that and showing them, and you then have to switch them on [no change] and then off to hide them really. You can't even add a one-liner script into Plugins to force it to hide them, as there's no method accessible in the API to display/hide scene-tabs - e.g. the non-existent
model.pages.show_tabs=false
would hide them if we had it...You could assign a shortcut key to do it
[That could then be linked to a Wscript key-stroke mimic on a PC but tooooo clunky!] -
Thanks for all your efforts. Indeed, it is not a huge deal -- but it does seem surprising that this 'glitch' would continue to exist at this stage. The main reason it is frustrating is because I like to keep as much vertical screen dimension as possible and tools (& scene manager) on a separate screen. Sometimes when I 'm just opening and making a quick change and exporting, its easy to forget to toggle off and get output at a different proportion.
Shortcut key is a good idea.

I've also noticed this problem and find it a bit frustrating.
I like to use Scene Tabs at the earlier stages in my project (when the number of scenes I've got fit nicely across the top of my screen (I work on a laptop). At a later stage in my project I've got too many scenes to fit across the top of my screen nicely (I do an interior view of every room as well as the usual plans, sections and elevations), so I'd rather use the Scenes Manager and switch off the (by now messy) scene tabs.
It would be nice if this setting could be saved with the file, but, as we've seen, they come back every time the file is opened again. Not the end of the world, but maybe could be 'fixed' in a future update.
Thanks for the shortcut key suggestion. Good workaround.
