15 would have done the job better, though. πŸ˜†

and 220v would have made a lot more sense.

Same reason they use 50Hz, I guess.

It saves on material costs in wiring. It's a throwback to rebuilding after WW2. There's an article somewhere that explains the INS and outs but primarily safety and costs were the driving force.

I think the article was on ring wiring. My dad's a lecky who bores us with this shit whenever we need stuff done. It may cost nothing but you pay in the end πŸ˜’

50Hz AC has greater losses and is not as efficient as 60HZ.
Due to the slower speed 50Hz electrical generators are 20% less effective
than 60Hz generators. Electrical transmission at 50Hz is about 10-15% less
efficient. 50Hz transformers require larger windings and 50Hz electric
motors are less efficient than those meant to run at 60Hz. They are more
costly to make to handle the electrical losses and the extra heat
                  generated at the lower frequency.

Oh well. He wasn't successful with the rubber cosh anyway.

Maybe because of the rubber cosh they decided it was an isolated incident.

These jokes are shocking. I'm resisting the urge to pull the plug on this thread. Keep it up and I'll blow a fuse. Jeez, I'm getting amped over this!

I suppose they wanted to keep the public insulated from the whole thing.

Ohm my, this is a revolting current in this conversation and it should be rectified immediately. Such matters should stay grounded in fact and not arc too far out of bounds.

That's quite enough. We've all had ample.

I just wish that north america had adopted a sensible plug/socket design like the UK. Having just built a house I have been quite horrified at how flimsy and tacky the electrical stuff is. On the other hand, I wish the UK would adopt the decidedly more civilised plumbing standards...
