I would use a filled circle. Copy it down to the height you want and the intersect the circles with the model.

        Select the largest topmost circle.
Copy it vertically downward with Move+Ctrl, using shift/arrow-key press to constrain in blue-axis so its where you want the 'ringcut' line.
Make the copy a group [this is so it doesn't interfere with other geometry accidentally].
Edit that group and overdraw a piece of segment to make a face.
Exit the edit session and copy the group vertically downward with Move+Ctrl, using shift/arrow-key press to constrain in blue-axis so its where you want the next 'ringcut' line.
Repeat this as many times as you want 'ringcuts'
Select the groups and the original curved surface[s] and right-click context-menu to intersect with selection.
        Erase the now unneeded groups.
The original surface[s] should now have your desired 'ringcuts' inscribed on them...

I used the top circle copy and added a face etc as it was conveniently bigger that what we needed... BUT you could just as easily drawn a new large faced rectangle slicing through the form about where you wanted the 'ringcut', grouped it and then done the move/copy etc as above to form the intersection marks... Note if you don't group the temporary intersecting face it will get an inner face split off during the intersection processing and it'll be awkward to erase it later - however there are times when you might want this new inner face to form too ๐Ÿ˜•

There's also the Knife tool if you have Artisan/Subdivide and Smooth...

            thank you Tobobo and TIG!

that worked. actually, I cannot say why it didn't worked before (it's the first thing I tried...).
I probably screwed up something... (it's a component inside a group inside...)

            cheers,
            Alessandro

I often use a section plane to get a better look, turn on hidden geometry, draw a rectangle, add detail, turn off hidden geom, delete the face and bits I don't want, select a curve and use follow me to add to the model.

I'm not sure what your 'ring cuts' look like, here's some pics of my technique... john

fwiw, a few more plugins that you could do this with: (if you're interested in going that route)

                  tools on surface -- offset
                  1001bit -- slice face horizontally
                  zorro2

thanks for all the additional suggestions,

artisan (and eventually tgi3d) is something I'm consider to buy if I get more serious about SU modeling (I'm using a bunch of modeling tools atm).
1001bit... oh, well I own that one but I forgot it has that feature too ๐Ÿ˜ž

the "lathe" approach is something I used in the past but this time I was looking for a way to quickly adjust an existing component

                      great community... ๐Ÿ˜‰

                      cheers,
                      Alessandro

Just FYI, cross section tool mentioned here is available unrestricted in the free Training Edition of Tgi3D SU Amorph.

                          thank you for the info,
I saw it was available in the free training edition (as pilou pointed out)
it was a more general thought about some very well done tools
I'm doing all the "organic" modeling outside SU at the moment (Silo3D and Cheetah3D mainly)

                          cheers,
