      Hello All,

I am modeling a house. I imported from 3d warehouse a model of staggered house shingles and used the paint bucket to fill a portion of the house exterior with this shingle pattern (uncolored). I want to "paint" the white shingles a green color. When I apply green "paint", the shingle pattern disappears and all I have is a solid green wall (with no shingle texture). How can I have both - shingles and green. Thanks! Jeff

Go into the Materials browser and Edit the existing color.

Darn Dave, that's a short and easy answer! 😑

          Jeff,

It must be an image file that is used for that "shingle" effect. Now if you change the material to another, it will obviously overwrite it.

What you could do (unless you find a better image) is to edit the texture image - that is; if you have the most basic image editing skills and a capable image editor.

First of all, go to SketchUp menu > Preferences and (on the PC) there is an "applications" tab where you can set your preferred image editor.

Now right click on the face that is painted with this material (a single face, not a curved surface or group/component) > Texture > Edit texture image.

This will instantly open your image editor where you can change the white to green (while keeping the shingle pattern) and when you press "save", the material will instantly reload in SU.

To me, changing the hue in SU sometimes works - to a very limited extent. Then it gets all fancy and adds all sorts of rainbow pixels.

In any case, one has to learn to edit/reload materials anyway.

Thank you Gaieus and others! I will edit the file in photoshop and paint it the right color then re-import to SU. Cheers, Jeff

No really need to re-import. Since SU 7.1 (I think - but maybe 7.0), when you save the file in PS (IF you edited the way I described), it will reload instantly.
